Car seat compatibility - ECE44/03 vs. AS/NZS 1754 "5 Ticks"

Hi,

I am living in Australia and we will be moving to Switzerland soon. We have two children and they both need car seats. Can we bring our car seats with us or should we buy them there? Our car seats comply with Australian standard and has '5 ticks' but I am not sure whether they comply with ECE 44/03 or not. I can't imagine how they can be very different though.

Thanks

Hi there - sadly my understanding is that no they are not accepted here. The seats are not very different, in fact I personally think Australian seats are better than the general child seats here (I like the clip at the back that holds them to the seat). Here the car seats don't have that unless you get isofix seats.

When we moved here from Australia we used our australian car seats but then someone told me that there might be a problem if there was an accident and the insurance might not pay up as they are not approved seats. So we switched to swiss approved seats to be sure.

You'll be interested, not to say astounded, when I tell you yesterday I saw a woman driving here without seat belt and next to her in the front passenger seat was a small child of about 6 years - with no kind of restraint at all.

At least the driver wasn't smoking...

It seems like they meet a higher standard so would be a shame to dump it for a lesser one just to have met the lower standards...

Maybe you could contact the manufacturers - there is also a chance it is the same seat as marketed in the EU market - or they could confirm. But I guess you need that EU sticker..

Thanks for the helpful advices. I will see if I can contact the manufacturers tomorrow. Given the cost of air freight, it may be cheaper (and easier) for us to buy new ones. How much do the basic car seats cost?
