Do I need USA sticker on the back of my car

Good morning,
Finally got our car. I was wondering if I need to affix USA sticker on the back while driving with US plates.
Also, do I need any of the following as I've heard about those.
- reflective jacket
- triangle

As far as I know you also have to have a first aid set in your along with the triangle and the reflective jacket. If you are driving with USA plates, then you should also have the sticker.

Re: Do I need USA sticker on the back of my car

No USA sticker requirement in Switzerland, I don't think. I have not seen this listed anywhere, including the federal admin.ch site and the cantonal automobile service sites.

I would, however, carry a breakdown triangle. If you're going to be driving outside of Switzerland then there are some other requirements. First-aid kit in Germany, reflective safety vests in France, spare bulbs in Italy, etc.

Yes first aid kit, triangle and safety vest, sticker from U.S. not required but do not put on a swiss one till it's changed to swiss or they make you take it off, as they did me. Put it on just before MFk .. LOL

YES. A USA sticker is legally required. I will try to find a link tonight. Will the Swiss police bother you if you do not have one? It depends. Easier to get someone at home get one from a US based autoclub and mail it to you. In the meantime print one out and stick in in the back window.

Re: Do I need USA sticker on the back of my car

I am a bit surprised by the many uninformed replies: You need to have a country sticker on your car if you drive abroad. Everywhere in Europe regradless which country the car is registered in. This is nothing new, but has been the case for decades. No, the small "country code" on modern EU numbers did not cancel the requirement. So if you drive with your Swiss registered car cross-border shopping, you need a CH sticker as well. If you have an EU car and drive it here, you need a sticker. If you have any non-EU plate, you are probably more likely to get checked and absolutely should put one on.

Reality is that nobody cares in neighbouring countries and I drove around with my Swiss plates the last four years without one and never got a fine in Germany, France, Italy or Austria. But you are still legally obliged to have one and if the Italian cop needs some coffee money, he might very well fine me.

Verbier is right. All foreign cars need to have a sticker indicating the country of registration. With the newer-style European plates that indicate country, these are no longer necessary. In practice, I've seen plenty of cars without stickers and no one seems to give them any bother.

Safety vests are not required in Switzerland, but they are required in neighbouring countries. Here is a map showing where they are required.

According to this guide, the only other compulsory equipment is a warning triangle and snow tyres where indicated by a sign.

Not quite right. You need a CH sticker because there's nothing on the Swiss number plate to indicate that it's Swiss (there's a cross, but nothing with the official 'CH' designation). This differs from many EU plates, which according to the AA do not require a sticker.

GB sticker

Compulsory, and failure to comply could result in an on-the-spot fine.
Euro-plates - number plates that include the GB euro-symbol - have been legal since March 2001 and make display of a conventional sticker unnecessary within the EU.

In some countries outside the EU a conventional sticker is required even if you have euro-plates, so it is always safer to display one.

Yes, I looked it up and it changed - within the EU on a (different) EU plate, you do not need to have the country sticker anymore. But as we all know is Switzerland not in the EU and here you still need it. The Internet is full of Dutch and Germans complaining that the Swiss cops fined them on their way to Italy for that...

We've been driving without a CH sticker for the last 10 years, never been stopped, let alone fined.
We do have a Kernow flag though .

Looks like the Swiss police is more anal about it when foreign cars come here than foreign cops when you are on Swiss plates over there. Who could have imagined that...?

Do not confuse common practice with what is the law.

For American cars. The approved sticker is USA.

Some Links:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...se_plate_codes

"In the European Union, vehicles from one member state do not need to display the oval while within another state, provided the number plate is in the common EU standard format, which includes the international vehicle registration code on the plate.[2]"

http://www.unece.org/trans/conventn/Distsigns.pdf

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle...European_Union

When traveling in the EU with a CH car you are "legally" required to identify the car with the CH sticker. Now in 99% of the cases, no one is going to bother you if you do not have one. For the 1% cases, you might want to have the magnetic version (see photos) that is sold at Migros DoIt for CHF 5.40. Saves some hassle if you are controlled by the police in one of the neighbouring countries. Say sorry, sorry, then pop it on to keep everyone happy then take it off when you are home again.

Re: Do I need USA sticker on the back of my car

Don't worry the Police will see you a mile off ! Putting a US sticker on your car will only make you more visable.

I refrained from putting an English flag on window as like to drive in
incognito with my Swiss plates.

I do believe a vest and triangle are compulsary as was given these with my new car so probably the sticker is.

But, strangely enough, motorcycles do not require a country sticker.

Not too sure about that (but have not checked). I think that this is why they have the small CH stickers sold in all gas stations that some people put on their car (which are not legal but look better that that huge mess of a sticker that is "official").

My guess (only) is that the small stickers are for motorcycles and ARE required.

No, they are not required for motorcycles. They are optional.

I currently have 6, and none have ever had stickers, even when I was riding around on US plates back in '86-'87.

I have also removed the blinkers on several, they are also not required (depends on the canton, however).

I was once told that you need to have a spare set of glasses in the car if you normally drive with glasses but I can't confirm it.
