Garage for Import car pre MFK test
 
Imported a car from Germany, BMW premium selection, 2006 model.
Got date from Strassenverkehrsamt for MFK .

Need inputs for whether I should go for pre-MFK test or not.
If yes, do tell me about a reasonable garage in/around Zurich ?
I have contacted TCS but they dont have any dates before 4th March.
(cannot take the car out on Raod as insurance on export number plates expire on 3rd march).

any suggestions?

CHF 50 for a pre-MFK inspection & report, and they have the equipment for engine / chassis cleaning.

Or you could just take it for the MFK test, and have them tell you if there's anything wrong. (If the car is "Swiss" clean, I'd do this).

I suggest you just take it in and let them check it. They will give you a list (if any) and you can go and get it fixed. There is no guarantee that a 3rd party inspection will find everything.....and as you know, the strassvehkesampt can be sensitive. You have a German made car as well.

Jet wash the engine & go yourself. With such a new car you have a very good chance of passing without issue unless the tester has 'personal' problems.

Does anyone know if it possible to obtain the list of points that are checked as part of the MFK?

I am having some work done to restore a classic car in the UK before bringing it to Switzerland. Given the age of the car the MFK is likely to present a problem therefore I would like to ensure that the work done in the UK is a complete as possible before submitting the car to the test here. Ideally I would like to be able to provide them with the testing criteria applied.

I don't think it's very different from a UK MOT, other than in needs to be very clean & no oil leeks. I heard horror stories, however I have got some fairly junky cars to pass.
Has the same model car you are impoting been before or have you just arrived in CH?

It would be the first time for the car. It will need to be imported and registered here.

I have heard plenty of horror stories too and that it is a much more strict test than the MOT.

The car itself is a 1973 Lotus Elan plus 2. I am having it checked out by a Lotus specialist in the UK and will have some work done on it there. If nothing else I want to be able to make sure it doesn't breakdown on the 13 hour drive here (not that I will be doing it all in one go).

I thought it would be useful to understand what would be done here so I can in effect ask them to do the same test.

I also need to understand what other adjustments will need to be made (e.g. head lights adjusted for driving on the right)

Are you bringing the car over as a pesonal import, that you owned for 6 months before comming to Switzerland & you arrived within the last year?

If the same model has never been imported before, without the exception above it will be expensive.

Headlights need to be changed & spedo needs to be in KMH the car should be standard as it left the factory (or kit). I suspect there were no self builds in CH!
Normal UK MOT things, brakes, tyres, lights,shocks, chassis, exaust. Doors must not sag, seatbelts, windscreen wipers & washers. Silencer & exaust should be original.

The headlights need to be changed so they dip and shine to the right. All the glass windows need to be the laminated type, the toughened is not always acceptable. Do you have a controlled Catalysator?

The problems might be tremendous. Can you contact a Lotus garage here and get a definitive is it possible: yes/no ?

I know from a lotus registry website that there are at least 2 in Switzerland so someone has managed to import them before.

I think my best bet is to contact the owner and find out what steps he has had to take. I suspect as you say it could be problematic

They could well have been personal imports when comming to Switzerland to live, you didn't answer the question so I doubt the exemptions apply to you..

I am not worried about the exemption from VAT or import duty. I am aware I will have to pay for these as I have acquired the car after my arrival in Switzerland.

My understanding is there is no exemption from the MFK so I am trying to understand more about what this will involve.

You might be able to find someone who still has a copy of the checklist you get given when you go for the inspection. I've lost ours. Our local garage refused to do the headlight changing and fix the wonky windscreen wiper before the check because he said they always find something to pull you up on so there is no point doing anything in advance. After the first inspection I was handed a copy ofthe checklist which indicated that it had failed on headlights, windscreen wiper, and also the brake discs. they made us replace the brake discs on a car less than 2 years old for a few tiny spots of rust!

I am not talking about taxes, or normal MFK.

If your EXACT model has never been approved for use in CH, you have a very expensive problem. You don't seem to be exempt from this major stumbling block. It's quite possible that the 2 cars in CH were.

Expect testing costs to exceed the value of the car, even a nice restored one!

That's really odd, the 28 year old discs on my 911 are very rusty, it's normal for steel!

Are you sure they stated the discs were rusty & needed replacement or did the garage just change the discs with the pads, as they like to do here!

its a 1973 lotus, I doubt very much it has a cat

There are plenty of posts about importing cars, basically it needs to be super clean, no leaks etc, and totally original, we imported an mg a couple of years ago, everything had to be original parts, they queried everything, you need as much documentation as you can get, obviously the car won't have a certificate of conformity so I don't know how you'll get round that, without one I hear the mfk is even more expensive.

I recently sold my UK lotus elan (m100) as I couldn't face trying to get that through the mkf, don't expect any help from lotus dealers etc here, they didn't want to know, maybe the lotus owners club here will help, but again the swiss mg owners club wouldn't even return my emails when we started the import on the mg

On the back of the Form 13.20 form you get from customs when you import a vehicle is a list of all the things they check when you take it for the test. I don't know if you can down load a copy of the form. If not I could email you a scanned copy.

There are loads on things on it that weren't checked (guy didn't even open the boot!) when I took ours but is is only 2 years old. It's probsably different for and old LHD car.

just as a ball park figure :)

the mg cost the worst part of 5k chf all in to import, that was with nothing major to fix or do, just the headlight change, general cleaning, checks, getting the paperwork together etc and paying a garage to do a pretest and take it to the mfk and argue with them

the mg had a certificate of conformity so we had an easier ride, as long as the car matched or was under the figures on that we where safe, it only just scrapped through on the noise levels, and they originally tried to fail it on the speedo reading spot on instead of reading over, the garage had to argue for quite a while with the mfk people.

The mg model in our spec was never sold in switzerland.

With a COC it's a doddle, so only 5,000, a kit car without a COC is going to be rather expensive!

What year was your MG? I understood that the certificate of conformity was introduced by the EU and is only available from car circa lat 90's onwards? Or is it possible to get one done for a specifc car?

If it came in at around CHF 5k I could probably live with that but not too keen on paying more.

I suppose my biggest concern from what has been written so far would be with regards to the car being "original". It was restored in the early 90's and as I mentioned I will have some further restoration work done on it. Certain modifications will have been made to improve things like the ignition but it is not like to is some super modified racer or anything. The original Lotus chassis has been replaced with a Spyder chassis which is fairly common in Elan restorations.
