So the only correct answer is: You are not at all allowed to drive your mothers UK car in Switzerland if you are a resident here. I know this is rediculuous, I do not see anything wrong with driving my dad's car to the supermarket in the morning when they are on a visit. But the law is clear on that in order to prevent people to not pay their taxes here.
Very interesting. I addressed the Strassenverkhersamt with this exact question and they did not care if the car was registered to me or my mother (that was the case). I could only legally drive it for 1 year from my date of entry (+ 3 month paid extension I was granted). I have this on paper.

Then there are numerous exceptions when you can drive a car on foreign plates (such as a rental car) for a limited time. This I don't know in detail but I'm sure it exists.

I got my info from the EF thread I linked. I read the Strassenverkehrsgesetz a bit in the meantime and it looks that you can drive a foreign car for up to 30 days without importing it in Switzerland. But the way I understood the text, the law is still about a "Halter" (owner) driving his own car here. I read similar discussions about the same in Germany and it seems you can get fined. I find that very strange as I grew up at the border and many people I know got Luxembourgish plates on whatever company account to save tax... probably one of those rules that are never checked.

Depends on if you hand in the license or not.
We had no choice in the matter- we tried to hold on to our UK licences when we had to change to Swiss ones (we are resident here permanently- although we still have property in the UK) but they told us we could not have both.

My mother is registered disabled, therefore I don't expect the CH authority will force her to drive or to penalise me when I drive her around.
Totally irrelevant here- and anyway you said she is NOT travelling with you. If the car was bought with the UK disability scheme, I'm sure it would be dodgy to bring it over for your own use?
Please listen to good advice, even if it is not what you want to hear. Just not worth the risk.

I was told that their interpretation of "Halter" is the current user in Switzerland, and not the person on the registration paper. This makes all points stick together, so you cannot overextend the allowance.

That is for sure wrong. Halter is an owner - the one with the legal liability. So if you borrow a friends/relatives car, you are not the Halter.
