How long can i drive my mother's uk car in basel?

Hi All,

I'm planning on using my mother's UK registered car in Basel until I get a new one from Swiss, and was wondering how long I could drive her car without having to change the UK number plate to a Swiss one?

She won't be travelling with me and my name is on her RSA insurance policy and RSA are ok for me drive the car in Swiss as long it's taxed, MOT'd and having a UK number plate.

I would be grateful if someone could tell me if I could drive the car as long as I like without changing the license plate as I cannot find the ruling after searching in Google for a long time.

P.S. The car is registered under her name.

Cheers, Kash

1 year counting from the issue date of your residency permit. No exceptions or workarounds for this. Doesn't matter who is the owner, as long as you are the user.

The only way you can get it extended is with a written permission of the Strassenverkehrsamt. I wrote a request and I was granted 3 extra months, but had to pay 150 CHF.

I have a similar problem. I will be using a friends car for the first period until i buy my own vehicle but don't really know how long i can use it for. The car is registered in Germany, belonging to a German resident.
Moreover what would be the obvious costs involved in using a foreign vehicle that doesn't belong to you? Vignette (Road Tax)? Anything else i may miss out on?

The inevitable speeding tickets.

Re: How long can i drive my mother's uk car in basel?

Thank you all for your advice.

I still find it strange that I'll have to change my mother's car number plate to a Swiss one although she doesn't live in Swiss.

I wonder what questions they will ask if they see that her name is on the V5 log book when it comes to change the registration.

Furthermore, if she was travelling with me to Swiss with her car for holiday and I drove the car, that means I would be forced to change her UK number plate to Swiss one? is this correct, or my understanding is completely wrong?

Cheers; Kashim

No you wouldn't have to change the plates if you were on holiday.

They would not ask questions if your name was on the insurance policy, as that would have your mothers name on it I assume as well as you own. The V5 is irrelevant if the documents match. Also you will need a valid MOT. If the documents are legal in the UK they are legal here.

There is a time limit for you too..

A) Be allowed to take the car out of the UK for a contined period, check your insurance policy normally it will be 3-6 months max.

B) If you are resident in SWITZERLAND and the car is in your name you have to import it after a period of time.

As the car is not in your name this cannot happen I assume.

Unless your mother signs the car over to you. You get a new V5 and obviously you would have to insure the car and add your mother as a named driver? Then you would be able to import the car, without the V5 changing I assume you cannot.

I agree so the only way around it is to change the UK V5 and import it.

As long as that period is within one year after date of entry.

Other options are drive it until the UK insurance maximum period expires then return it to the UK.

Buy another UK car and import it before the year is up

Buy a Swiss one. (Easily the easiest route)

BTW if you do import it you will have to change the headlights and pass a MFK, if the car is in any way non-standard you will have severe problems/hassle.

Re: How long can i drive my mother's uk car in basel?

Thanks Catalyst,

I apologise in advance if I'm dragging this longer than it should be, but if I plan to drive my mother's UK car in Basel having a B Permit then I'm not legally obliged to change the number plate to the Swiss one as the car is in my mother's name.

And to make sure I don't have to transfer to a Swiss number plate, I pressume I can drive the car back to UK until the grace period of the insurace for driving outside UK expires and then perhaps bring it back next year into Swiss and use up the grace period of insurance again.

I know this is long winded but what I'm ultimately trying to do is to avoid having to change the number plate to a Swiss one because once the car is registered in Swiss then the insurance will be void.

Thank you for all your valuable advice.

Cheers, Kashim

Hi,

Once you have been here for a year & have a Swiss license, you can not drive a foreign registered car in Switzerland.

However and here's the catch as soon as you become a Swiss resident it will probably invalidate your UK insurance unless you tell them, be very careful playing this game.

BTW the Country is called Switzerland

The people are "Swiss'

Depends on if you hand in the license or not.

I think I have a way round this problem as I made an international licence (book format) before I left UK.

Page 23 - C don't hand in your license for a Swiss one it's not EU!

http://www.morethan.com/Pages/Produc...qs.aspx#europe

Interesting I may use this one

I take my car to Europe at least 5 months of the year. Can you provide cover?

We can cover you for a maximum of 365 days abroad.

Which implies after 1 yr you have to change insurer or export.

There is a very probability that you are caught. If you have cranky neighbours, they may report you in a moment of boredom. There are hundreds of (mostly German) foreign car which are keeping their foreign number plates even after a year. Some of these Swiss rules are simply not very 21st century.

Re: How long can i drive my mother's uk car in basel?

Ok, kids, sorry but you got it completely wrong. The key here is that the car is not registered on the OP but the mother.

So: If you come to Switzerland with your OWN car, you can import it within 1 year of residence.

But: As soon as you are registered in Switzerland, you are not allowed to drive anybody else's car on a foreign plate within Switzerland!

So the only correct answer is: You are not at all allowed to drive your mothers UK car in Switzerland if you are a resident here. I know this is rediculuous, I do not see anything wrong with driving my dad's car to the supermarket in the morning when they are on a visit. But the law is clear on that in order to prevent people to not pay their taxes here.

I must admit that I illegally drove a car here before, I learned about it in the Having an Ariel Atom discussion.

I looked it up back then and it is true... need to google a bit to find the law.

My mother is registered disabled, therefore I don't expect the CH authority will force her to drive or to penalise me when I drive her around.
