Rush hour in Basle

Trying to figure out where to live in Basel, and wanted to find out when the rush hour occurrs (morning and evening)- is it the typical 8.00-9.00 and 17.00-18.00?

Re: Rush hour in Basle

Can't say what it is like these days, but when I worked there, our office started work at 7.30 if I remember rightly.

Re: Rush hour in Basle

The Swiss start early. I'd say traffic is heaviest between 7:15-8:30 in the morning, tapering off towards 9am. In the evening, there's a heavy rush from 17:00 until 19:00.

Even during "rush" hour, traffic normally flows freely unless there's an accident. The only exception to this is the A3 to/from Zurich, which can be stop-and-go traffic if it's particularly heavy.

Re: Rush hour in Basle

It depends on whereabouts you will be working and what your family circumstances are.

Basel has a highly comprehensive public transport system and the town centre is very small - it is possible to get from one side to the other in about half an hour on foot.

When we moved over, I scrapped my UK car with every intention of buying one in CH. We ended up in an apartment next to a tram stop and somehow never got around to buying a new car as my work at the time was 10 mins away by tram and a similar journey time by bicycle.

If you have young kids, living in the town centre may prove less attractive as you may want a place with a garden - which will be more likely out of town. Again, the outlying areas are reasonably well connected to Basel centre; but a car may make more sense.

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks to all for the comments and advice.....we're in the process of moving and looking for a place to live and Frenkendorf fits the bill and I was trying to guage how long it would take to commute to Alschwil on a daily basis by car.
