Geneva to Milan delay - Friday's night train

Good afternoon,

I'd like to know if someone has experience traveling by Geneve-Milan train on Fridays' nights . One which is leaving at 18:42 and arrives to Milan at 22:38
There's another train someone would need to take at 23:00 - so I was wondering if it's realistic to make this connection work. Please post if you have had good/bad experience.

Thanks

Re: Geneva to Milan delay - Friday's night train

I have used the EuroCity 41 Geneva - ( Brig ) Domodossola - Milan train twice, and it has on both instances reached Milan no more than 15 minutes late ( delay largely owing to border checks at Domodossola ).

Re: Geneva to Milan delay - Friday's night train

When I've taken trains along that line, there have invariably been delays in Italy, and arriving within 30 minutes of the scheduled time I would consider to be a success. However, I haven't taken it for a year or two, in which time I believe that the SBB have taken over a lot of the operation from the Italians and tried to work on the reliability and punctuality of the trains. I believe it has improved, but I would still be concerned if I didn't have a backup plan in case I was delayed. Make a backup plan before going and you'll have a lot less stress (i.e., find out about a later train connection, or know where a cheap hotel is near the train station in Milan, just in case).

Re: Geneva to Milan delay - Friday's night train

I think we'll just drive to Milan then - the risk is too high (there's going to be plan in the morning to catch). Thank you for advice!
