| | Cost of licence plates for 50cc motorbike?
Does anyone know how much registration plates (immatriculation??) costs for a 50cc motorbike in canton of Vaud?
I'm sure this info should be easier to find, but have not found it anywhere. I heard once that car plates can cost 2000CHF!

Plates costs depend mainly on the size of the engine, and the power.
My daughter's 50cc bike (not a moped) is around CHF 120/year, perhaps less, but certainly not more.
My most powerfull bike, with 1000cc and 140HP, is about CHF 350/year.
But, this is road tax, not insurance!

Thanks tom.
So road tax is the same as buying license plates?
Sorry i'm new to this and a bit clueless...I've never owned any kind of car or moped here.

You can't buy license plates. They're the property of the Canton.
You pay road tax, insurance and admininstration fees.
road tax - according to type and size of vehicle
insurance - according to type and size of vehicle and the risk your gender, age and experience pose to the insurer
fees - according to the Canton's regulations, consult Vaud's MoT web site

There is a charge made by the OCN, to supply new plates for a vehicle if there are no existing ones, or change of ownership.
Although, not a direct comparison, but I recently had to get a plate for an unregistered, newly purchased trailer, that cost me 65 chufs at Fribourg OCN.
This I would guess is probably just an admin. fee applicable to the issue of plates for all vehicles, but you would need to check.
The road tax, mentioned by Tom above, is billed depending on factors such as vehicle type, engine size and age. This is normally sent in the post yearly, or shortly after a vehicle is registered after changing hands, for the remaining part of each calender year.
EDIT: If buying a brand new, previously unregistered machine, there may be additional, initial fees.

I don't quite get that my trailer has it's own plate different to my car but that's Switzerland I guess.

I was relating to my situation:
- for reasons that are not longer relevant, my imported BMW was initially registered in my wife's name;
- later when I wanted it (legal ownership) to revert (back) to me, she received a road tax refund and I, a road tax bill (for same amount plus admim. fee, I think) - in the post;
- as the plate wasn't changing, no visit to OCN was required, hence everything being dealt with through the post, in this case.
[i.e. road tax not being charged by/at OCN when a new plate is issued]
