Driving across the border with L Permit [Learner Driving License!]

(BASEL) - Just wondering if one can drive across the border to France or Germany on a L permit.

Re: Driving across the border with L Permit

Of course, why couldn't one do it? I've done this many times and I've even travelled without it

Re: Driving across the border with L Permit

I meant driving with a Learner's Driving Permit (not the other L residence permit).

No, it is not permitted.

You can drive to other cantons, but not other countries.

In any case, you have a licensed driver with you, why can't they drive?

it is not possible to do so. One of my mates did it and was caught by the police in France; although they let him off with a warning only

Re: Driving across the border with L Permit

I drive across the border quite frequently with only my driving licence (I keep forgetting my passport when I'm in Basel). Never been an issue (as they haven't stopped me yet) but I wouldn't recommend it.

What's the worst that could happen? They wouldn't allow me to go through I guess... which for me is a risk that I can take (as it's just friends I may visit by chance when I am there).

If they did stop my I would give the story about me thinking it was all schengen and I thought I just needed photographic ID. Actually a friend of mine travelled from Germany to Spain on an aeroplane with only his driving licence (after he lost his passport)--they allowed him.
