UK Photocard Driving Licence- Update photo every 10 years

Hi
A piece of interesting information that had escaped me and may be of help to those of you with UK photocard driving licences. Apparently, these are only valid for 10 years!!!! The DVLA are supposed to send you a reminder when the photo needs changing, but for those of you who are like me, have lived overseas for a number of years, these letters may never be received. The fine for an out of date photo if caught is £1000!!! The date it expires is printed on the front of your card.
For those with a Swiss licence this obviously won't be a problem, but for anyone else- just check....

Easiest thing to do is swap your license for a Swiss one and then swap it back when/if you move back to the UK :-) Worth doing unless you are certain you'll be here for less than a year...

Re: UK Photocard Driving Licence- Update photo every 10 years

I realised last month that mine had expired in December.
But I have since swapped it for a Swiss licence. I didn't ask the question but they either didn't notice, or didn't mind that the card had expired (the paper licence has an expiry date of 2050+ on it)

I'm still within my first 12 months here so it was an easy swap with just the basic eye test needed.

I still have the older paper licences. I checked around a year ago whether it was mandated to swap it for a photo licence, but didn't find anything to confirm it, so have just stuck with it.

Thanks for the info anyway.

Kash.

Re: UK Photocard Driving Licence- Update photo every 10 years

I noticed that mine expired at the end of last year and rang the DVLA to see what I could do (I drive in the UK but have no need in Switzerland so I didn't change my license). They need a UK address which I don't have, but does anybody know if you can use a relatives address? I just need a license so I can hire a car in the UK.

Any help appreciated. I don't want to knowlingly break the law because of the insurance implications etc.

Indeed. My parents got a letter (addressed to me) about this.

I binned it as 1) I've been here longer than 10 years and 2) I don't have a UK licence as I swapped it for a CH one when I moved here.

See my comment above.

Really surprised you haven't changed your licence. You are aware that if you are a resident here, and have been for over 1 year, then your UK licence will not be valid to drive on in CH - even a hire car?

(Disclaimer: this is AFAIK, so maybe I don't know much )

Yes it is true and I have thought about it, but my wife drives here so I don't bother, and we don't have a car ourselves.

This is true. You are supposed to change it within a year however they may make exceptions for L permit holders. You may be able to hire a car but if you are stopped by the police and they see that you have been in the country longer than a year then it's a problem. Not sure what that means exactly. This country is big brother when it comes to knowing how long you have been living here.
