Re: Hiring a car from Switzerland to drive to Eastern Europe, is this possible?

I would second that idea of buying a cheap car, along with the remark that a second driver would be free of charge.

The hire companies have to insure against third party claims in countries where the laws are not quite so clear as in EU countries, AND of course they need to insure against theft of the car.

Fairly new hired cars will often disappear east of Munich and be broken up for the spare parts. If you can buy your own insurance on your own low value car, it is going to be much cheaper. Just be sure to immobilize the car when ever you park it, so it stays there!

Even hiring in Italy can be fun. We rented a car at Europcar, Rome Fiumicino airport last year. Driving to certain southern provinces would have required additional insurance.

(Because this thread is 9 years old,) Are there any new options for renting cars in Switzerland and driving to Greece, via Italy and the ferry boat?
When you search a car rental via holiday autos, the t's and c's link beside each search result shows the country restrictions and daily surcharges for each rental company.

I'd third it!

Quite a few of my mates have done this, and a few even made a profit along the way by selling a car on in a different city or country.

I don't know about renting but I usually (well, let's say quite often) travel by car back home and never happened anything - expensive car, Swiss plates and all that. I am sure the risks are highly overestimated. But for this reason it might be too expensive to rent, I would agree on that.
I am actually amused by this thread.

Re: Hiring a car from Switzerland to drive to Eastern Europe, is this possible?

Buying a car and selling it on return is very risky.
I would suggest talk to the car companies directly.
You can also try to hire a car from Germany. We did it once and we had no problem.

How so?

Buy a somewhat new used car, get half kasko, and hope it gets stolen at the end of your trip, problem solved!

If nothing helps, buy an old A6 or so from ricardo, put it through a decent service (liquids, brakes), take out the cheapest liability-only insurance for it and drive that.
;-)
On a safe return, sell it.
Thanks for a great response. The idea to rent in DE is great and the idea to get something from Ricardo is even greater. It'll be an adventure!

Re: Hiring a car from Switzerland to drive to Eastern Europe, is this possible?

Does anybody know if an ADAC (the German car-"club") membership is valid for the whole of Europe? I couldn't find any fine-print that says otherwise.
Might be worth taking out a membership just for that.

The protection for breakdown is only for Germany €49, unless you buy world wide cover €84

Re: Hiring a car from Switzerland to drive to Eastern Europe, is this possible?

Actually car theft rate in PL is about half of CH. But an average car in CH is newer and fancier than an average one in PL, so odds are probably higher for it to be stolen. Maybe there are some fraud schemes as well for stealing rental cars which begin by going to EE.
What is shocking to me is the theft rate in Italy.

Re: Hiring a car from Switzerland to drive to Eastern Europe, is this possible?

It was a typical scam to rent a car in Germany (or any of Western Europe) with fake IDs, drive it over the border to Poland and then sell it there for transport further East.
That was on-top of the "normal" car-theft, where people had their X5s, Porsches and Mercedes stolen.
I remember a case where somebody's X5 was tracked to Belarus (I think), where the insurance naturally wanted to claim it back (it wasn't a small insurance company). Only problem was, that it was in the possession of a high-ranking government official, who refused to give it up.
The insurance company went to great lengths (calling favors in with politicians etc), but the car remained where it was...

I remember a TV documentary which showed hoodlums comparing various luxury cars and how well they could be used in various roles - disposing of a body and bank job iirc.

None of them felt the Bentley was up to the job.

Re: Hiring a car from Switzerland to drive to Eastern Europe, is this possible?

I would just rent a car and not share my itinerary.
Or you could buy a cheap car.
Last year I spent CHF 600 for a battered Peugeot 106. It lasted nearly two months before being towed away and kissed goodbye. That could have been enough for your eastern europe travel.

Haha, thanks for the link yacek, I couldn't be bothered to look after anything like that. Yep, exactly as I thought.
