| | Mandatory Health Checks for Driver's Licence?
I got a letter from the strassenverkehrsamt zug saying I have to see my gp for a general health check to make sure I am still able to drive. Now I'm not an elderly or disabled person and this is the first time in ten years I ever got this. MG's sil has been here for twenty years and is older than me and HE never got one. Is this something new? Are they doing general checks now for all age groups? Has this happened to anyone else?

I think I did it last in 2009 when I arrived. Didn't have to do the eye test thing though.

It might be a mistake. They have a test every couple of years for ederly people but I am not sure at what age they start. Maybe it's easiest if you just call and ask them. Let me know if you need help.

Shortly before I turned seventy was the first time I was told I had to go for a check-up.

I believe there is a vehicle category which is standard on most licences that allows driving of vehicles greater than 3.5 tonnes. If your licence permits you to drive this category I believe a regular health checkup is mandatory. When I received a request for a checkup a few years ago, I simply responded that I did not need that category on my licence. Result is I am restricted to 3.5 tonnes, but need no health checks | The following 3 users would like to thank jaudi for this useful post: | |

And for that, I had to go and see an optician some years ago so I could keep the truck and trailer licence.
In the letter it says just in general "Aerztliche Begutachtung über die Fahreignung" not singled out truck or anything.

I think it's every five years. I got the rating transferred from my U.K. licence as I've hired and driven a 7.5 tonne lorry a few times and I decided it would be best to keep it.
When I had the medical, the doctor, offered, for a small additional fee, to do other tests like a cholesterol test so I just saw the whole thing as a fairly cheap general health-check.
To the OP: if it's five years since you had your licence first issued then that's the answer. It's your five-yearly re-check.

| | | | | Actually it is the first of that kind ever. As I said, I had to have one eye-check about 7-8 years ago.

The five-yearly medical is mandatory if you have the C and D categories. Which you have.
It may have been an administration error that allowed you to get your licence without a medical.
You now have to decide whether you want to drive trucks and minibuses (with more than eight people passenger seats) or have those categories removed from your licence.

If you have C& D or C1, D1 you can ask for them to be removed to avoid the need for 5 yearly exams until 50. This is usually an option on the letter.
After 50 your own GP can no longer assess you it has to be someone on their list and then it's every 3 years until 70 when it's every 2 years.

As usual with Switzerland, it seems there are huge regional variations. When we moved here and changed our driving licences to Swiss ones as required, we had to have health checks and eye checks. The general health check was done by our GP (I was 58 and OH 63).
