Re: Do I need my "original" US driving license to get a Swiss driving license

I went down to the SVA here in Zurich with my driver's abstract from Texas (where I first got my license) and my current US driver's license that was only 3 months old from WV (since I had just renewed it). The guy just looked at them both, dated my driving to my 18th birthday and CHF 100 later, I had a license.

In order to get a driver's abstract for an address that I wasn't registered at anymore, I just had to send a letter to the Texas DOT saying I used to live there and needed the abstract. Turns out I officially got my driver's license 6 months before my 16th birthday; that was nice to know. My family was kind enough to send the check and accept the letter, because they don't send internationally most of the time. If you have someone in the US that can receive the letter or send the check, it really does help.

Re: Do I need my "original" US driving license to get a Swiss driving license

Update: Just got back from Yverdon. I brought some old license from (2004) and my current US driving license. The old license was not my original license, but it proved I have been driving more than 5 years so they accepted it.

Glad I don't have to deal with the DMV!

Re: Do I need my "original" US driving license to get a Swiss driving license

I had my original ontario paper drivers license test results which my parents mailed to me when I went to get my Swiss license here in Lausanne. They accepted that and put the original date on my Swiss license.

I also asked for my Canadian license back and they gave it to me with a sticker saying not valid in Switzerland.

Re: Do I need my "original" US driving license to get a Swiss driving license

In Canton Zug, I had the very pleasant experience this month (at the Strassenverkehrsamt in front of Zugerland) of being able to convert my US license (which was issued only 2 years ago) for a Swiss one without having to bring proof that I have had the US license for at least 3 years. They simply asked when I first got my license (in my case, it was 1988), which they wrote down on the form. One week later, the Swiss license arrived. Swiss efficiency? Or was I just lucky???

Re: Do I need my "original" US driving license to get a Swiss driving license

I think this is a YMMV situation. I switched my CA drivers license after being in Zurich for almost two years. I did happen to have a few of my expired CA licenses in CH, but the person at the Strassenverkehrsamt just asked me when I was first licensed. I told him, in the US, most kids make sure to take their test ON their 16th birthday... and he was happy with that. Maybe it helped that I was over 40 and look EXTREMELY honest!

yeah, you got lucky. Here in ZH I had to provide a driving record showing that I had my license since I was 16. Then they dated my license to 18, stating that I couldn't have a CH one that showed earlier than that. Cool part was that I had gotten my motorcycle license MUCH later than 16, but my CH license shows both endorsements from 18 years old.
