The worst airport(s) in Europe

CDG – is there possibly a worse capital city airport in Europe?

Some wonderful examples of how well CDG has been designed for the poor travelling folk who go through that shite-hole.

Let’s take the airplane to the stand, make people walk out of the aircraft up the gangway and into the airport… oh no! Wait! Let’s not. Let’s take them up the gangway, into the airport, then down some steps and out into a bus and ferry them across the airport for 15 min to the furthest terminal. Don’t forget to make sure the bus driver doesn’t go too fast, so put lots of speed bumps in…

For connecting flights, let’s make sure that passengers don’t have to go landside, I mean, what’s the point, they’re only going to have to go back through secur… Oops, no that’s too easy. Let’s make them go all the way through luggage claims and then out landside. Then they can walk for 45 min to their connecting terminal. Alternatively they can wait for the terminal shuttle for 30 min, then a 15 min transfer followed by another 30 min walk

Let’s make sure that there really is nothing to do while waiting for their flight (which will be late). So we’ll remove any shops and put all cafés in a kinda “limbo” no-man’s land. In fact, we’ll invent this space to exist where only people with flight tickets can go, but is located before the waiting lounges that you can only access through security. That way, once through, and they’ve discovered that their flight is delayed by 1 hr, they’ll have nothing to eat or drink. In fact we’re doing them a favour, ‘cos let’s face it, you wouldn't feed the food they serve to a dog (and to think the French get snooty about food and look down on everyone else…)

To top it all, let’s make CDG a really nice place to be. Grey concrete is very fashionable, and really, neon fluorescent lights are under-appreciated. We’ll also make a really nice glass tear-drop type thing terminal – chique design – and for excitement, we’ll keep the punters guessing when the next chunk will fall off.

Whatever you do, avoid like the plague.

So what's your vote for worst major airport (we're not talking about places like Durham-Tees Valley airport here, although even that's got more character IMO)?

Re: The worst airport(s) in Europe

hahaha
that was funny.....sorry to hear about your terrible experience with french airports.

you should have got a direct flight. i remember an occassion when i was travelling to pakistan via some place in central asia (cant remember the name now), anyway it was the worst airport i have ever seen in my life. the terminal was like a gas-chamber with no AC system, the food prices were that comparable to THE RITZ, the customer advisors started to swear and thump each other, and to top it all up.....the bloody flight was delayed by 6 hours.

oohh yeah...it was Tashkent airport in uzbekistan. now i remember

Re: The worst airport(s) in Europe

Is it really that bad? It puts Gatwick in a very favourable light!

(Isn't there a new TGV route Paris to Basel ?)

Confused! Roissy is shown as also CDG http://www.qype.com/place/90502-Aero...e-Gaulle-Paris

Heathrow won over CDG according to this back in 2009:

http://travel.ninemsn.com.au/world/7...worst-airports

Quote:

Heathrow Airport was a clear 'winner' in the 'worst airport' category with 15% of the votes of worldwide travellers. British travellers were even more damning, with 30% naming Heathrow as the worst airport in the world.

Paris Charles de Gaulle also fared badly

Charles de Gaulle airport, in Paris, was voted second worst, followed by Los Angeles, Frankfurt International and Miami International.

Re: The worst airport(s) in Europe

CDG sucked, but was nothing compared to the intercontinental flight with air france: three out of four toilets of the 747 broke... the TVs showed the classic French movie either in red, green or blue... and the service was so sub zero that the stewardess "forgot" to bring me food!

That was five years ago and I have never booked an air france flight again, no matter how cheap they might be. And I for one take Heathrow over CDG any day.

Re: The worst airport(s) in Europe

Dude - get a life p-lease, CDG and Roissy are one and the same.

There are a few airports in Paris: CDG, Le Bourget, Velizy-Villacoublay, Orly, Pontoise, Toussus-le-Noble.

Not that I consider this to be my area of expertise or anything.......

Carlos Hun, which Terminal were you in? That would help to understand your experience. And (sorry about this) you must not fly much if this is the only airport you've ever been parked out on remote.

My expertise is from working in CDG Terminal 1, "le huis clos" for 9 years

That was no doubt influenced by the opening of Terminal 5 the previous year and the complete chaos that ensued.

I've never been to a Paris airport, but clearly these modern, western airports are focussing on the wrong things. The check-in process at the airport of Moldova:

I agree with Carlos!

CDG is horrible! Been there twice and I avoid it like the Plague! No way I'll go back in there.

And don't believe that it is easier if you speak french when asking help/questions/informations.... nope, they will still give you the wrong informations and you'll be more lost.... but this time even further!

I would vote for Athens airport, but they really got their act together for the Olympics, and the new one is lovely.

The old one, though... ah, the memories...

Re: The worst airport(s) in Europe

Can't believe JFK missed the world's worst list.
I agree Paris CDG is a mess and the worst of Europe's main airports. Parts of Rome Fiumicino aren't great either.
Heathrow's more of an adventure than a airport. It's like entering the Labyrinth! I think the facilities are great. It's the bad customer service and bottlenecks in airside flight connection security that suck. And because of it's size and sheer number of passengers, when things go wrong, they go wrong big time. That's why I avoid it when I can.

Ah, but for me, my most travelled airport is T5, and it's the best (terminal) in the world.

Flown four times now through Heathrow and it is just a totally unpleasant experience. Far from being understaffed, though, it is somewhat overstaffed with too many officious wanna-be policemen inventing new security tortures, aimed mainly at the mum travelling on her own with a toddler.

Was emptying my entire hand-luggage because there was a ballpoint pen with a tiny torch fitted, which was stowed in the front pocket then leaving me to stuff it all back whilst trying to control a marauding 2 year old ENTIRELY necessary?

Manchester isn't much better.

Re: The worst airport(s) in Europe

No other place in Europe has security as anal as the one in Heathrow. I was lucky to go through smoothly, but what I've seen ordinary people go through was nothing short of insulting.

Best ones on my list are definitely the international Asian hubs.
