Gemeinde tageskarten for international travel

I want to take a direct train from Zurich to Milan but I was told by staff in SBB that the Gemeinde Tageskarte wouldn't cover this and I would need to go to Lugano, and then buy a separate ticket to Milan.

Doesn't sound right to me as a GA still works on a direct train from Zurich to Milan and brings the cost down to CHF 20 which is just the italian side. It's not like SBB staff to get things wrong though - has anyone had an experience of this?

Thanks,

Re: Gemeinde tageskarten for international travel

Your GA is valid up to Chiasso, and SBB gives you a discount to buy a slow train ticket for CHF12 rtn to Milano Centrale, or higher for the EuroCity train.

In Milano Centrale, it costs EUR4 one way to Chiasso ( no, your GA is no good in Italy ).
