Selling my car

Anyone got a checklist of what I need to do when selling my car privately? I am assuming that when the buyer does his registration I will automatically be deregistered but this all sounds to simple....any help please

You probably want to go along and get a copy of the cancelled papers, only then you know for sure that it has been re registered.!

Don't assume anything.

You won't be deregistered until you return your plates.
So, don't forget to take your plates with you. The plates go with the person not the car.

Re: Selling my car

To be honest, I've always gone quickly to the MFK on the day I handed it over and cancelled the registration (you can still drive that day), then driven the car to the seller and returned with my plates (if I was delivering it). If they picked it up, it was the same - I handed over the car with cancelled papers and they had to find a way to get it home. Either they bring garage plates, or in one case I cancelled the plates, sent them the car papers after the money was in my account, they re-registered and came with the new plates. It's always a balance of trust and prudence.

Also make a simple bill of sale, signed by both parties. The TCS has a sample document on their website. It includes standard statements about the vehicle being sold as seen, no guarantees.

Re: Selling my car

This quiestion has arisen with us in the last few days. We want to sell our car privately, but will be buying another very shortly afterwards. I fully understand that the purchaser will take the papers along to get the car registered in his name, but what if he delays, or doesn't bother (ie if he buying to sell on abroad)?
Since the car we will buy will be new and the garage will sort out the papers, should we just drop the plates off to the traffic office once our car is sold and let the seller collect them? Same with the insuarnce, just let the garage deal with it all? I honestly can't rememeber what happened last time we bought our car.

Re: Selling my car

I'd just hand in the plates and de-register it. Then, the buyer gets the cancelled registration, and can get plates, put them on, and drive away.

If you don't have the time to do it yourself, your local garagiste can do it (or anyone, actually).
