Hi folks,

I was wondering if one of you kind folk would answer a few questions for me about parking. I am getting a hire car for a couple of months next week and need to know where I can park and what the permits mean in Neuchâtel.

So, I've seen the blue parking spots and the white ones. Someone told me that the blue you pay for a permit and the white is free? Is this correct?

If so, where do I get a blue parking permit? I have had different info on this, someone told me it was free, someone told me it was about 150CHF a year. Not fussed about this, seems very cheap, just need clarification.

I'm moving into a new flat next week in the centre of town and there is white parking places right outside with numbers on them, are they likely to be rented?

Just a bit of clarification needed before I get the car, don't want it clamped or ticketed on my first day.

As far as the white one with the numbers go they are free during the night. Otherwise there is a machine when you press the number then enter some money for however long you want to stay there for.

For parking permits in Neuchatel. My friend says she paid 170CHF for the year though

So I just go to the police station for the 170CHf permit?

For the blue permits you have to go to the commune I think. They are like permits for residents so I think you will need your rental contract or something to show you live in the area.
I'm not sure of all the details, I will have to ask hubby when he gets home. He tried to get one last year for the flat he was living in and they wouldn't give him one as he already had a parking space allocated to his flat (even though somebody else was always in it). I seem to remember the cost was going to be about 150CHF though.

EDIT. From Porsch's post it seems that you have to go to the police station for them. They don't seem to be very organised though (except when it comes to slapping parking fines on car windows).

You need to go to the Police to get a macaron.

If you are talking in the city of Neuchatel apparently you can do it online, by email, by fax or by post. It costs CHF110 according to the website.
