Handing over foreign plates (urgent please)

Good evening,
I just received a letter from GE's automobile registration and technical inspection office. I'm going to convert to Swiss plates. They specify in the note that "The foreign plates will be taken off your car and handed over at our counters". However, my state requires handing plates back to them to cancel insurance and de-register. Did anyone face a similar situation?
Thanks

Have you spoken to the GE folks about this?

As far as I remember when I did it (in Zug) they said they would send the license plates back to the country where they came from. Maybe they do that in Geneva too? You have to ask them. You are probably not the first case they have to handle. Good luck!

Re: Handing over foreign plates (urgent please)

We also had to hand in our British plates to the automobile registration and technical inspection office in Lausanne. They then apparently send them on to the DVLC, the automobile registration office in Great Britain. We got a letter from Lausanne to confirm that they had been sent.

They were quite insistent that the plates had to be removed before they gave us the Swiss plates.

A hint - try removing your plates before the inspection. The screws in one of our plates had oxidised and we had to find a garage to remove the plate for us. In England plates are firmly attached to one's car as sometimes others find alternative uses for a number plate. Here in Switzerland they take seconds to remove.

Another hint - you need to show proof of at least a month's insurance. We only had a few days left on the temporary cover and had to make a last minute call to our insurers to prove to the Swiss office that our car was insured.

Re: Handing over foreign plates (urgent please)

Conclusion.
Apparently, they don't take away foreign plates from international servants. But they have taken away all customs form (13.20A and another one)
Also, today I learned how people get cool/semi-cool plates - you just ask for it, then they go through the available plates in the drawer and let you pick - just like mobile number.
Technical inspection apparently wasn't an issue - the car would pass anyway.

Re: Handing over foreign plates (urgent please)

They can give you a copy of the forms - make sure you get one! we had to get one later as our insurance back home wouldn't stop charging the insurance until we had proof the car really was in another country...even though we sent them the plates. It's a bit of a pain to get the copies of the forms later, so get a copy today before they file it all away
