Shipping car from Canada to Switzerland

Hi folks,

I am planning to ship my car from Canada to Switzerland. I am canadien and will start working in CH in one week.

I can not sell my car in such a short period of time and planning to ship it over to CH. I am wondering if this possible with all these strict rules in CH. I can easily ship it from here somewhere in Europe but how is this going to work with CH customs.

Did anybody tried before to ship car(SUV) from North America to CH. I would be very glad to hear peoples opinion on this one.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Shipping car from Canada to Switzerland

I hear in fees it's about US$2000

What make and model is it and how old? In theory, a few changes and you should be fine. Lucky for you, Canada is KPH so one less thing

You can also drive it with Canadian plates for a year - whether you can get insurance, however, is another question.

Re: Shipping car from Canada to Switzerland

Should be easier these days, but I know one guy lost his car to a garage for 4 months or so after importing for the USA.

(Sorry: mentions US, but may be relevant)

Following on from Lob - some Swiss insurers (Zurich as least) will give insurance for foreign registered cars. They insured my UK car while I had it here for a few months.

Re: Shipping car from Canada to Switzerland

If you are a Swiss citizen who has lived in Canada and are returning home, you can bring the car at no charge. There are caveats, such as having owned the car for at least 12 months, and how long you were in Canada. This is part of some sort of repatriation incentive. I'm assuming that policy towards Canada is the same as that of the US.

As for shipping, it can be loaded into a container, and will probably take up half of it. There may be extra charge for some prep work in loading it, but should not cost any different otherwise.

Your quickest path to the official information is through the Swiss embassy in Canada.

Re: Shipping car from Canada to Switzerland

Hi, We (My swiss husband and I) shipped our American Ford Taurus in 1991 from California to CH (OK, ages ago I know), and had to pay to alter the car to fit the Strassenverkehrsamt's rules. At the time it cost around Sfr2000 which included disabling the foresighted safety features which were not yet legal here. It was well worth the effort to bring the car over and change it to suit. We had already had had a previous auto insurance policy with a company, which were happy to insure the new vehicle. Good Luck!
