Unmarked Police car on the Sustenpass

Dear EFers,

For anyone who will be planning a car or motorcycle journey along the Sustenpass, please be aware that there is a sporty looking dark metallic grey/gun-metal grey VW Golf patrolling the pass which is actually a Police car. The car appears to be a new TSI 4Motion type and has blacked-out windows.

I witnessed two motorcyclists discovering this yesterday when the car stopped them and the Policemen got out of the vehicle presumably to 'discuss' something with them.

Maybe we should have a thread where people can advise where they have noticed an unmarked Police car operating? I wrote this thread as in general, I advise everyone to drive within the speed limits and with care but it is always worth knowing when to look out for a Police car. (Just so that it would be nice to drive with that little bit ‘extra care’ and attention in Police patrolled areas....)

There are quite a few stretches on the passes when speeding is almost impossible.

Until they put 60kmh limits all over the Alps

Is there not the risk that this police car might have moved elsewhere by the time the message gets out?
Could be. Assuming the care was on the Susten then I guess that pass is part of it's regular patrol but maybe it also covers Grimsel/Furka. At least if you see this car on any of these passes, then it may be worth taking care as it is the area where it appears to roam.

I generally stick to the speed limit.

Even around corners .

erm, Sustenpass? It was definitely closed on Saturday and the schedule says it will open on May 27th - did it open early?

It's open most of the way up from the Interlaken side. Just the top part is closed until end of this month I think.

The passes definitely need more patrolling. The amount of motorcycles that ride like the switchbacks are closed-off race tracks is unreal. In fact, I think they should have one day a month where the passes are closed to all except high powered motorbikes. A fee of 30chf can be charged, which goes towards the cost of recovering machine and body parts at the end of the day.

It was motorbikes who were slowing us down at the weekend... Your idea is a great one but shouldn't be restricted to bikes. Furka and Grimsel had some stunning views this weekend

Fair enough, but different days for different carnage.

I like litespeed's idea very much, but I think it should only be open to those who have organ donor cards AND who pay a fee. First Monday in the month for bikes, second Monday for cars, with a rotation on the different passes, different one every month.

Does always remind me of the Stephen Fry line about talking to his Aunt's consultant about her catarachts:

"We don't have any donors at the moment - but it is raining - so some should be along shortly"

What about cycles? Some of those mothers on the Klausen must have been touching 100 kmph and only lycra (wrong in each and every situation, no excuses) to protect their insides .

Are these the road hogs who go 3-4 abreast uphill around hairpins, average age 60 and don't wear cycle helmets???

Though after yesterdays tragic accident on the Giro Italia they may change their minds about flying down hill sans helmet.

Continuing off topic a moment...

Practically every time I have been over the high alps there has been some incident or other, the sorry sight of a small group of forlorn motorcyclists and a cop car waiting while the climbers go down to fetch the wreckage. I was given some tips on mountain riding by a cop on the advanced motorcycling course.

Ride to what you can see. Work on the basis if you cannot see round a bend there might be a tractor parked in the road.

If there are white lines, they are usually there for a reason. Dont cross them unless you really really have to. See a video I posted a while back on Nuveno. Shortly after the start you will see why it not a good idea to commit to a blind corner on the wrong side...

http://www.youtube.com/user/karrobex#p/u/13/W7ihlEMh_Rc

I note that there are alot of places on the passes where the limit is 50 BTW, and they are patrolled. I have a certain sympathy with the cops who have to pull people out of the gorges in kit form when they get it wrong.

On topic again. The Department du Nord has apparantly had an agreement to pursue people in Belguim and Kent for a while, in part owing to the high incidence of accidents caused by people treating the Calis to Oostend road as a racetrack.

To quote 2000 AD's Torquemada, "Be Vigilant, Be Pure, Behave"

Arse! That's my fun over....

How can they pursue people in Kent? They inform the UK coppers and they get nicked and dragged back to France?

I have visions of the motorcyclist and police car (lights flashing) sitting at either end of a ferry waiting to resume their hot pursuit.
