Canadian YZF-R1 import problems
 
So, when I moved to Zürich from Vancouver, I looked at the used bike market, and opted to bring my bike with me. I asked the local dealer to help me ship it over, and even called the Strassenverkehrsamt Zürich to make sure my license would be ok.


Here we are now on the other side. Long story short, I’ve somehow made it past a dealer in Canada, customs on both sides and an importer in Switzerland and only now as I’m preparing the final details for the Fahrzeugprüfung have they informed me that Canadian bikes don’t have the proper emissions documents and that, best case, I will have to go through an emissions test at the Berner Fachhochschule; which of course, I’m told costs another 1,600 CHF minimum…


As It’s a 2002, the cost of shipping, duty (the importer screwed up the import date and I was charged full tax as a result. I already tried to appeal, but it went nowhere) and repairs to make the kit compliant, it’s starting to cost more that the bike is worth anywhere in the world…


My question is, has anyone had to deal with this? Surely I’m not the first one as the dealership over here seems to think.
Does anyone know of any other solutions that aren’t so wallet-poaching?

Edit: I should point out that I'm still receiving endless amounts of conflicting information. Yamaha Switzerland is convinced that nobody on the continent will do an emissions test on a motorcycle, while the Strassenverkehrsamt is sure there are three in the country alone. Of course, on calling directly, two of the thee won't in fact do a motorcycle, and the third only does emissions, not decibel testing. The Yamaha dealer has said that it's impossible due to the VIN(no idea), and the guy at Berner Fachhochschule(the one centre that will do it) is convinced that it's the same bike in principal and it should pass their test no problem; of course, I can only know for sure after paying the obscene fees to "give it a shot".

Sorry to hear about your problems! No advice I am afraid and not sure if anyone else has done something similar. When it comes to cars I know that cars in US and Canada are made to different vehicle regulations compared to Europe (and most of the world). I guess bikes too :(

When I moved here in '86, with my '85 Guzzi Lemans I had bought new in '85, I had to go through this.

Back then, it was CHF 1100 or so, so 1600 sounds not out of line 25 years on.

Plus, in 2007, I bought a NEW Ducati 999R in Italy (2003 manufacture) and was given the choice of going through the expensive test (like I did on the LeMans), or paying the importer CHF 1500 (I paid, it was easier).

Two thoughts:

It will be 10 years old next year. Does this help if you waited?
Are things easier in other Kantons, like Basel, that get more imports?

Well, when I had some difficulty getting the 999R I bought in Italy registered in Ticino, it was the head of MFK Basel that offered to check through my documents (I faxed them to him after speaking to him on the phone), and verified that they were all in order, but I don't think you can avoid the extra inspection. But he was very helpful (however only speaks German).

MFK Basel has an informative website as well.

Sadly no. it’s an EU wide deal to do with ECE conformity and I’m not sure, but I think it’s 20 years for “collectors” rules.

Basel’s site is actually much more useful than Zürich’s, thanks. All my conversations with these guys have been in German (along with a couple that I swear were swiss german, contrary to their claims), so maybe I'll give him a call.

What really gets me, is that according to the guy at Berner Fachhochschule, (and I suppose I’ll listen to him as he’s the only qualified place in the country for bike emissions) the bike model is absolutely identical, and it’s literally only the ece paperwork! What am I getting for 2000 CHF? I poorly written piece of paper… there has to be an alternative.

Sorry to hear all the trouble. In this case, the best would still seem to be the official Yamaha importer. They have access to all the appropriate info, documentation etc...
If not escalate it to Yamaha Europe.

I've been told that if an official importer was to conduct an inspection and find the bike to be of a satisfactorily similar spec, that this could over-ride the emissions control test requirement.

To this effect, I've now been in communication with Hostettler AG, who is apparently the Yamaha importer for ZH. I can't seem to get anywhere with them though - the email turn-around is well over a week and when they do answer, they either miss the point of my email and go on a tangent, or answer a part of one of the questions... I've tried calling but there never seems to be anyone there.

Does anyone know of another importer that I could deal with? I don't care if I have to cross the country, the unprofessionalism of these guys will put me over the edge.

And update to this, to help the search function.

Importing a bike from a non-EU country requires noise and emissions controls, unless you can cite a previous admission of a like model/region/year. Problem there, is that the authorities won't actually tell you if anything similar has been approved unless you're bringing in a lot as they won't make as much money.

So, it's literally 2,000 CHF for a piece of paper. They know it'll pass the exam, they know that it's essentially the same thing, and there's literally one centre in the country that is "qualified" to perform the tests to the satisfaction of the Strassenverkehrsamt.

Should also be mentioned that these measurements aren't required if you import the vehicle as "personal goods" with a relocation, and if they try to deny the personal goods status, make sure you appeal within the 90 days (this was my mistake).

When I was looking to buy my Yamaha, I went to the Yamaha Hosteller AG in Sursee Kanton Luzern.

They were quite friendly. I did speak German / Swiss German to them so I don't know how there English is.

Perhaps give them a call or take a drive there and speak to them in person.

in my experience...it hurts.

i was quoted 5000 sfr for all tests needed to get a US/Can bike registered over here. Any repairs/work to pass the tests would be on top of that (ex replace exhaust with one with EU conformity stamp)

I eventually decided to bring it to the UK and sell there as it already had UK plates and getting UK reg is much easier than over here.

For you - I think you have 2 options:

1. use it for 12 months on the Canadian license plates and then make it a track day and get another bike for the road
2. try and sell it as a track bike or sell it piece by piece...and get another bike for the road. For this option - you might want to contact a few dealers in the UK who might be interested. I got 3,500 UK pounds for a 2004 ZX10R with 18,500 km on it.

Problem is that I've already been here for over a year, so no go. I've done all the mechanical work myself, so it'll pass, it's just the paper at this point. I also really can't complain about overall value, I got a screaming deal on it in Canada, so even with these charges it's under retail all-in - of course, I'll still kick up a fuss as it's just a cash grab.

Already spoke with these guys, and escalated to Yamaha EU in Holland when they stopped responding. Unfortunately, it seems as though because I already know the costs of the certification and have no mechanical work to be done, they don't want to deal with it.

I have been using Speer Racing to book some riding events.
On the web site they have an exhast site.
If this is a EU law, perhaps they could help you with the exhast issues. May even be cheeper the in CH??

The issue is that the emissions measurements need to be stated on the vehicle registration, thus tied to the vin - they don't do that in Canada.

I've actually already gotten an eu exhaust, and even the original eu exhaust for this model/year - sadly not good enough as the registration still doesn't have measurements.


Makes me wonder though, what if one were to change the engine for an eu one? the vin would still be Canadian, but they would have little excuse to measure a certified eu engine. I would imagine that's somehow illegal though.
