P.S: The comment was obviously only targeted at the plain vanilla Subarus. Anything close to a STI would be more the Spreitenbach of cars.

(with comparatively many kms) | | | | | more km's, more hp's, more electronic luxury stuff inside...all mean more ownership costs. what i am looking for is a budget family car that is fun to drive. the original post was about comparing pretty boring (but sensible) new civic with a nice old bmw, that were about the same price...i quickly realized neither of those will be large enough to carry all of us around, so switch to the family wagon size. there, we have the luxury wagons (which are out of my range) and boring plain vanilla's (accord, passat, saab, volvo etc) and the 4X4 AWD, BOXER DIESEL LEGACY...something of a hybrid between a rally car and family wagon. See, within my parameters, it makes the most sense...

just go on top gear. they will make you make the best choice.
Also the luxury ones are in your class. some km really mean nothing. I just sw a volvo for sale on a lot with freeeeee service to 150000 km . that right there is worth some money. and there is tons of 2002-2005 mercs and bmw or audis well within your price range.

The Legacy is a solid choice and actually has very balanced handling, to the point of being very entertaining in snow. Comes with a nice boxer soundtrack as well. The Impreza is very compact inside, to the point of not really being an estate, and it's either dull and thirsty in the naturally aspirated form, or crazy fun and thirsty in the WRX and STI form (but still too compact for a family).
Audi has never learned to stop hanging their motor way out front of the axle... |
