Changining number plates US->CH, Blecherette

Hello!

I'm changing my US number plates to the Swiss ones in Vaud. As far as I understand, I have to give my US plates to the SAN and they will send them to the US. The US DMV certainly doesn't need my plates (they told me so), and I would also very much like to keep them as a souvenir.
Do they really insist on surrendering the US plates at Blecherette? Did anyone manage to keep the plates? Please share your experience!
Generally, any advice on the whole process would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Nobody changed plates at Blecherette? How about VD? The rules are probably the same.

In Zurich they returned my US plate after the registration was completed.

They never took my US plates, but that was in '87.

Re: Changining number plates US->CH, Blecherette

they wanted to take mine, I told them I had to return them myself for refund (which is true if I wanted refund) - after speaking with supervisor they were ok with it.

If you're really worried, you can just remove them before going, you can drive the day of your test without plates (says so on your letter).

Good luck.
