Is this like a spot the ball competition, closest to the bus stop wins?

In case of a tie, winner will be the one closest to the middle door of the bus, but still on the pavement.
Where are we measuring the number of steps from - middle of the station exit?

Re: [Where EXACTLY is the] bus station at Basel SBB?

OK. In the name of scien public spir nobil boredom, I went and checked it out:

Distance from bottom of escalators to front door (included for completeness): 35 steps
Distance from middle of station entrance archway (where the blind guide is) to front door step of bus: 13 steps, my 14th would have put me on the bus.

Sorry Cyrus, I went for front door, as due to the curve of the road and position of the bus, it would be silly to walk past it.

Average distance of my steps: 40 cm

Total distance from archway to bus: 13 x 40 cm = 5.20 m

OP, what this means is that when you get to the bottom of the escalator, if you walk more than 40 steps (including margin of error) and cannot see the bus, you've gone in the wrong direction.

If you've walked more than 50 steps (including margin of error) from the bottom of the escalator and are not on the bus, you've gone in the wrong direction.

Oh. And I can report that the bus was green, as was the one behind it.

22 yards, the next round is on you...

Is there some form of EF pedantry award? If so, this thread wins hands down, with special mention to Carlos

Sorry, I've just come across this thread. I'm still not clear.

Could someone please tell me where I can get the bus to the airport? It sounds awfully complicated.

Re: Bus station at Basel SBB?

This thread wns. Best thread on catching public transport from Basel SBB to the airport EVER!

OK, first up: I got into Basel SBB this morning but couldn't post until now, so I've been beaten to this post by, well, everyone. Ergo, way too many posts to multi-quote, although everyone deserves a special mention.

Secondly: I wuz wrong. I'm man enough to admit it. I was walking from the bottom of the escalator toward the station entrance/exit and from 10 metres inside the station I could actually see the front of that damn #50 bus right outside the entrance. I even tried taking itsy-bitsy little mincing steps and I still couldn't take 20 steps to the bus. (Yes, the bus stop has moved -- this current location has a temporary bus stop sign, so I feel marginally vindicated. That's how my mind works.)

Thirdly: said highly visible bus was green.

But the good news, from my perspective, is the carefully crafted terms of my wager:

If it's less than 20 paces, you and jrspet win. If it's more, you owe me a beer.
As you see, the beer flowed in one direction only ...

But I'll still buy a beer for any of the EFers who got this right, if/when I ever meet you.

Anyone want to take up my bet that the OP is so confused about taking the bus to the airport that he misses his flight?

I'm also thinking of taking this particular route by public transport in the near future. I was starting to feel moderately comfortable but then I saw your post... and I am a little concerned again - Is it possible for someone to check this sign again and see if it states until when exactly this is the temporary situation? And if it says anything about the new position? I intend to fly on the last day of this month. Thanks in advance

The original bus stop is hidden down a secret alley way behind the front of the station. However, on days when the temperature drops below 10 degrees, it moves to another location; the directions to which are written in Romanish and kept locked up near the primary bus stop. The key is kept in the baker's to the left of the right hand side of the bus stop.

No, it's the right of the left hand side of the bus stop -- or are you talking about the secret temporary, old bus stop?

@paizuri: As a community service, and because I'm worried about you worrying about missing your flight, I'll point out that you may have missed the point of 98% of this thread: the distance between the "old" and "new" airport bus stops is about 20 metres. You can't miss it. Look for a big bus with a "50" on it. Wherever it stops, somewhere near the station, will de facto be the bus stop.

Enjoy your trip.

I feel sorry for anyone who's stumbled across this thread via Google. I bet this comes up first when you search for "Eek! How can I find the bus stop for the airport bus from Basel railway station? And I don't speak French, either!"

Is it necessary or good manners (for foreigners) to offer to purchase something from the baker before asking for the key?

Re: [Where EXACTLY is the] bus station at Basel SBB?

If I may inject a little usefulness.

If you're catching the bus at a civilised hour then it should be easy to find because there's virtually always a bus there and you can see it from the SBB door. The next bus tends to arrive as the previous bus is leaving.

If you need to buy a ticket, however it's a little trickier. The TNW Ticket machine is tucked around the corner against the side of the SBB entrance (you can see it from the bus, but not from the SBB entrance).

If you get onto the bus using the front door then watch the little barrier, if it has one. They've got a bit of a spring in them and it can hurt a bit if it smacks you.

If a passenger has a Swiss Pass / Tageskarte / GA, the bus fare is not required ie the ride to Euroairport is free.
