I sometimes wonder about this forum. How many threads do we actually need to discuss the costs and preferred routes for driving between here and the UK? There must be dozens!
We only need one but it's good to keep adding to it to keep it up to date as things do change over time.

I spent ages the other month trying to find the hovercraft in Ramsgate

When my parents returned from their honeymoon on the continent, they loaded their car on to a plane and flew across.

Driving to/from UK: Routes, advice, discussion

4 hours to Luxemburg, fuel up, 4 hours to Calais or Rotterdam....whichever one you fancy.

My best for Zurich to Calais is......... 6 hours 30 minutes. I hit the Basel/Germany border at 6am and maxed the car on the empty road..... The days of 250kph are gone now, though I think with a favourable breeze, I can get 180kph on the clock

Interestingly, we're doing a week this year but I don't fancy the drive. Usually, I do here -> Rotterdam, sleep and watch Abba tribute bands, Hull -> home.....but I need a break from that.

Oh and fuel is especially distressing at UK prices.....or it would be if the was worth more than f-all

We are going to be driving from East Sussex to Switzerland in July when we move there permantley... cant wait.
Its far easier to drive as we have a dog and cat and a 9 year old daughter who will sleep.
We will be hiring a car too as we would have sold ours..

Good luck

Re: Visits to the UK - does anyone drive there?

We are driving back for a week soon as the dogs are coming with us. Normally I fly but thats just for weekend trips. We have the slog up to Manchester too, so doing overnight stops in France rather than deal with the 'wonderful' welcome we have in hotels in the UK with two dogs in tow!

But for years when we lived in the UK we drove to Italy a least once a year - loved it. But we did use the overnight ferry from Hull.

I still like to drive back every year or so as its amazing what you find to bring back that would take me over the baggage allowance
