Buying a Car in Switzerland (FR)

So, I have decided to treat my self to a Porsche 996 when moving to Fribourg at the end of June and have a few questions. These have probably been answered to death before so I apologize on beforehand.

I have seen a quite few 996's within my budget and found good deals on insurance and have calculated the Road tax as elsewhere mentioned in this excellent forum. I take it I need to get the number plates as well so how does this work and how much should I expect to pay for these?

I also take it you don't just walk in and buy the car and then drive off? Is there an order in how things are done (i.e. first buy the car, get the insurance, get the number plates etc)? And what is the timing like?

Last time I bought a car was back in 2002 which I never drove as it was for my GF so I'm on lost ground here

Any pointers would be highly appreciated and of great help

Re: Buying a Car in Switzerland (FR)

Step 1. Find your car
Step 2. Organise insurance
Step 3. Get the cancelled paper for the car
Step 4. Take that with the insurance paper to the vehicle licencing office
Step 5. Leave with plates
Step 6. Put plates on car
Step 7. Order a new set of rear tyres

Hope that helps

Re: Buying a Car in Switzerland (FR)

Basically what you have been told above except that steps 2 -7 can be done by dealership. Hence it leaves you with focusing on an important step no. 1 to find your favourite car and its respective dealer.

Thanks Guys... Highly appreciated :-)

Now the biggest hurdle: convincing the old ball and chain that a 911 is a better buy than a Volvo XC90...

To start you off: It's a hell of a lot lighter, so will cost a lot less in road tax each year; it's a lot smaller, therefore much easier to park; it should have pretty much reached the bottom of it's depreciation curve by now; they are surprisingly good on fuel...

Of course I don't need to tell you they are wonderful to drive...and that they aren't the best when it comes to luggage room!
