Getting to Zurich airport from Basel ( with kids and luggage )

We have 3 kids ( 5 and under) and are off for a family holiday this weekend. Getting the train to Zurich airport isn't really an option as the kids can't manage their own luggage.

So how does one get to the airport? (from near Basel and we have no car.) At home we could book an airport shuttle service that would be more or less door to door but I haven't been able to find similar here.

Suggestions and tips welcome.

Re: Getting to Zurich airport

Train and check your luggage in at Basel SBB (check if this is possible, but it certainly is on most Swiss, and I guess, Star Alliance flights).

Or don't give the children any luggage to carry (and take the train).

Or pay around 400 CHF (a rough guess) for a taxi...

Your choice.

Either way, with most options you are going to have to handle luggage at some point. With that in mind I don't quite understand why you think two adults (I'm assuming) can't manage 3 children + luggage. I mean, what you going to do at the other end?

Finally, have a nice holiday!

Re: Getting to Zurich airport

SBB does luggage to your overseas destination, as well as to the local airport ZH:

http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-service...ns-abroad.html

http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-service...l-baggage.html

http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-service...itzerland.html

http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-service...ilstation.html

From Basel SBB, there is one train without changes to Zurich Flughafen ( Zurich Airport ) leaving at 09:40 for example. Welcome to the forum!

Should be an interesting thread, judging from the previous thread relating to Basel SBB and the bus station.

Re: Getting to Zurich airport from Basel ( with kids and luggage )

Thanks for the I'm sure friendly suggestions but we are quite familiar with the SBB (as we don't have a car) and are aware of the fact that we can send our luggage ahead from Basel to Kloten.

However with 2 children that we basically have to carry (being 1 and 2), and all the gear that goes with small children (think pram, port-a-cot, etc) plus the usual luggage for a 2 week holiday (we are packing as light as we can but we still have a 20 something hour flight to Asia to contend with).

We only have 2 arms each. Traveling with 3 young kids is a struggle no matter how light you pack.

Put out a thread under Market Place / Jobs offered - I am sure our members will be most helpful in arriving at a just solution tailored to your needs.

I found this taxi man very reasonable ( he has collected my guests from major cities door to door - speaks DE & can understand simple EN ). You might want to consider him for the outward and / or inward journey.

Re: Getting to Zurich airport

Having 3 children myself under 5, I can understand your concern and need to plan ahead.

If I were you I would have one adult catch a bus with the 3 kids to Basel SBB. This leaves the other adult free to focus on the baggage - take a taxi or perhaps a helpful friend with a car. My guess is that you and the kids are used to travelling on the bus together so this will take care of nervous tension. Give yourselves plenty of time and rendezvous at the station.
Then jrspet's suggestion on the direct train and luggage checkin sounds like a plan.

Having made the long flight between Asia and Europe with small children (2yo and 4yo) I made sure my hand luggage included spare clothes for me and kids, plus some paracetamol for the kids. You don't want to be on a 13hour flight and your kid gets a fever. I also had phenergan to be prepared for travel sickness with the kids; we didn't use it though. But I don't know if you can by it here. If you have a problem on the way you can always get it in Asia for your trip back.

Safe travels...

You are not the only person with three children aged 5 and under.

Check the luggage through. Take the direct train - really I didn't think anyone would be dumb enough to take a connecting train. You may even be able to check your luggage in the night before - call and ask. Buggies and hand luggage you take with you. Cot etc in the hold, so you only really have a challenge from bus/taxi to check-in with all of your luggage, and same again at the other end. Everything comes down to this bottleneck.

You won't be able to use buggies (unless it is a double) as it is almost impossible to push a buggy as well as a luggage trolley - well impossible to do with any semblance of control. So you'll have to stack everything up with the children on top. Once checked in, you'll only have to deal with the children and hand luggage.

If you are really stressed, go the night before and check in to a hotel at Zurich airport.

Re: Getting to Zurich airport from Basel ( with kids and luggage )

So you don't want to take the direct train and don't want to take a taxi and it's too far to walk. Simple answer - don't go.

Travelling with young kids isn't easy, so if you aren't up to it, don't do it. But I don't think anybody from EF is going to jump out of the woodwork and say 'I'll take you all and pick you up afterwards' if that's what you're waiting for.

Re: Getting to Zurich airport from Basel ( with kids and luggage )

A bit of a long winded solution, but it might save you stress and money on the day.

The evening before (or earlier in the day for a night flight) one of you takes a train to Zurich Airport, hires a car (plus car seats) and drives back home. You can then drive yourselves to the airport and just drop the car back into the car hire place.

Depending on the cost, you could rent the car one way from Basel, but I think this tends to be an expensive option.

I usually use Holiday Autos to get a decent car hire deal.

Excellent idea, with only one flaw: how are they going to get from the car to the check-in? It is the same problem whether they take the train, car, taxi... For that matter, they could easily get a mobility car from SBB to and from the station, change over to the train and then off to Zurich airport.

So far Ittigen's rent-a-rustic-pensioner is the only solution that comes close to it, but the OP might find himself/herself with 3 children and one OAP to look after...

Alternatively, as Nigelr suggests, if the OP wants someone to help them out, the s/he should specifically ask for that help.

Thanks that is a very good idea to travel separately to the train station. That is part of our problem is all the hand luggage you need with spare clothes, snacks, nappies, entertainment etc.......(Wouldn't it be nice to just travel with a book and a few minature toiletries again!!). We are taking the pram but use backpacks to carry the kids in transit, works really well. A girl from Ireland gave me a paracetamol exact dose sachet was great, we only have the big bottle, have not been to a chemist here yet.....

Carlos unfortunitly we may not be able to check our luggage through, with work etc, hard to get luggage to train station 2 days in advance. But with all the great tips i am sure we will get to Zurich airport with our luggage and without costing a small fortune (and much less stressed than anticipated).

Thanks all for the tips, I am new to forums but this was great, will definitly be using it in the future!!

Re: Getting to Zurich airport from Basel ( with kids and luggage )

First of all, welcome to the forum.

I can imagine it's not easy travelling with 3 young kids under 5 years of age but certainly not impossible with good forward planning and organization and there have been some great suggestions already put forward by other posters.

Also, if I were in your position and given the fact you are travelling this weekend, I'd start taking action now as opposed to waiting around to see whatever else may transpire via the forum...

I suggest you do this. That then takes care of all but the essentials you need in your hand luggage for the children and yourselves as mentioned in the post by @Robyn.oz.

Given your situation, making the time to check in luggage in advance is a top priority and surely this can be done outside of working hours?

Can't a family member, friend or neighbour travel with you to the airport to help with the children? Offer to pay their expenses whether it's by train or car if so and ask for their help on your return.

If you do get car transportation, that then takes care of the main, heavier luggage situation as well.

Things do get a little misconstrued. Really we travel often with the kids. We have only lived here for 3 months, only moved out of our provided accomodation not even 2 weeks ago and met our neighbours on Sunday (So we have no family, or friends here yet). We are definitly NOT wanting someone to jump out of the wood work and take us, that is crazy. We were just wondering if there was some sort of airporter bus service (which is common and we are used to in NZ and Aus) here. As the trains are so good it seems not, but there are small operators that do the same thing but are unfortunitly very costly.

So thanks all, we are going to travel separately to SBB, one with kids on the trams and one in taxi with luggage. From there with luggage trolleys we should be fine, ofcourse we will prebook tickets and catch that direct train!
