Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

Yes it's done and sorted.
I don't think they tried to cheat me, it's just that local prices are very expensive.

For next times i'll look online for quality parts but decent prices, and will do the job here, or compare with "abroad prices" to see if it's worthy.

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

CHF 105/disk is cheap, also 102 for two sets of pads.

Disks for a bike are 3x that, and that's buying them at the cheapest internet price!

You should have requested the old discs back so you could actually check for damage
It's a good bet that they are junk, I've gone through two sets in 140k km on my Focus, and considering that it's CHF 80/disk to get the turned (if they are still usable), I'd rather pay the extra 25 for new ones.

Sure, but add in shipping, VAT, etc., and it's not a big difference.

Also, they don't ship to CH.

you know if those pads aren't toyota branded, or come with a swiss conformity certificate then they are not allowed to be on your car here, right? if they check on your mfk then you'll fail, and be fined and god know what your insurance company would have to say about it

that's before you take into account all the fake parts that are for sale on ebay,

brakes are the one thing you really shouldn't be trying to save a few quid on

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

You are right- one should not mess with cheap break pads for the safety of him/herself and for other road users-
True that a "box" is not enough to prove authenticity of the break pads bought on ebay or anywhere else.

But: What tells you beside "trust" that the local dealer did not put the cheap parts?

I mean it's no such thing as I buy from "ford.com" the parts (or compare reference number) then I look at it before they install it or after they installed it.

Right not it's all obscure and rely all on the dealer. I'm not going to dismount the wheels to see what they put- And anyway how would I verify it's genuine and reliable parts?

It's a "old market" with lot of monopoly, really.
And like with diamond, it does not means that because you paid more for it that it's more genuine or better quality-

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

I also paid 600.- for rear pads and discs on a Focus. I would gladly pay it again. The fronts on our Focus are still good at 150'000 km, and we are really the last of the late brakers. I have no idea how they've survived so well. Ford's OEM stuff is really good. Cheap aftermarket pads are, 9 times out of 10, simply that: cheap. The braking performance of cheese. The OEM pads and discs haul the car down at a rate that used to be sports car territory, and yet they work in all temperatures, all the time (unlike the fancy pads I had on my more sporting vehicle a few years' back which needed some heat in them to prevent butt-puckering moments).

Once the abrasive breaking pads in my car separated from their metal holder. They were branded by Delphi.
