Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

Hi,
General Question: How can we find/evaluate the cost of the repair for a car?
Is there the "official prices" for the parts somewhere?
(maybe its normal process)

How much would cost a rear brakes replacement for a ford focus type of car?
(Don't know if it's "disk" or the whole system that needs replacement).
(Both rear brakes disk or rear system + his work on it).

The dealer told me a price that makes that pain in the ass () I just want to see if it's normal price-

Of course we came in for something else but they say the rear are ruined, we have to replace them...

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

In English?

Do you know what the problem is?

It could be pads, disks, calipers, master cylinder, fluid etc etc.

What are the symptons?

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

Also, what sort of car are we talking about? It'll cost a lot more to replace the discs on a big autobahn cruiser than it will on a little city run-about.

As a ballpark, though, I'd count on around CHF100- for a set of pads, CHF250- for a set of discs, and about an hour-and-a-half of labour (CHF300- at a main dealer) to fit them.

In Switzerland- For example maybe it's common like that one check the official parts from Ford.com then compare to the dealer price (?)-
Like with computers for example, one can look toppreise, then check on the local shop.

No idea for the symptoms - We came for "pollution test" the dealer maintenance guy said the "rear brakes" are dead and need replacement.
I'm not sure what (disks? system? etc...).
We haven't noticed any issue but it's a big official ford dealer so I doubt they would be so sneaky-

Ok they said it will cost approx 600chf just for the rear brakes (again don't know what exactly).

600chf that's 2 high end GPS devices!

It's Focus Ford type (monospace cmax old end 2007 version).

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

Replacing the rear rotors and all brake pads plus fluid change on a Patrol = 2000 CHF - 1500 parts, 500 labour.

Get quotes from 2 or 3 dealers - I was quoted from 2000 to 3000.

Take it somewhere else and get them to check the brakes etc. See if they come up with the same issues.

2 disks + pads + labor about 500 CHF or so (I have a Focus, and have done this myself), parts only 3-400 CHF.

I just got my rear brake fixed. Two shiny new discs on an A4 were including work some 150-200 EUR in Germany (I also changed the weels, dsiposed some old tyres... alltogether 250). I am sure that AMAG would have charged more than 600 CHFs for the same.

Go cross border shopping and you can maybe save enough for one of those GPS...

Yes it's good for safety. We don't want to be a nuisance or danger on the road for others. It's sorted anyway I accepted and made payment.

But 600chf!!

I mean for 2 little metallic thing it's pricey- compare to the device +maps + technology of a GPS!

Re: Car Rear Brake (or system?) replacement: Cost, approximation

focus's have brake wear indicator things (sorry don't know the name) when the rears wear out they make a hell of a noise. simple to replace pads yourself, only pita is you need to wind the pistons back in, not just push them, this needs a special tool.

find a local garage indy garage and get them to take a look and quote.

for just pads it should be quick and quite cheap, if you can get access to the discs then run your finger over them and see if you have a lip or they are pitted or cracked, a small lip is ok.

have you ever replaced the front brakes?, just out of interest really, as last time I was back in the uk my mates car had worn out rears yet the fronts where fine, and the fronts do more of the braking then the rears so I'd expect them to wear out quicker.

I have no ideas- it's a second hand car we got
We haven't done anything but those rear brakes.

Yes I don't really know what they replace for 600chf but its the total cost.

I guess when i'll get the detailed bill I will know!

Anyway no one is surprise for those prices range so it seems normal.

Top tip: Don't do it just after you've been driving. I once did that. They get rather hot.

Ok I got the detailled bill:

Replacement rear disks, replacement rear pads + their work.

It's like 210chf for their work
2 rear disks: 2*105chf= 210CHF
1 set of rear pads: 102CHF

So it's 522chf + tax
All my colleagues think it's normal. They event mentioned how expensive would be if it was front brakes!

Costly around here !

You should have requested the old discs back so you could actually check for damage

Very good idea!
For next times

Anyway I understand that the cost of the spare parts is not obvious.
Either one buys the parts on the internet links (some links given in this forum), and pay for the "worker time" or one goes to the dealer, asks estimation and let them do the work + parts.

There's no such thing as the "official prices" of ford parts on ford.com.

So it's like a close market, quite different than computers

I am not sure if you have already had the car repaired.

For CHF 600,-- I would drive to France and leave it there 2 days for a repair.

A friendly garage charged me CHF 600,-- here for replacing disks and pads on an old Mercedes 280 about 5 years ago.
