Soccer hooligans may be dumped off the trains :)

Swiss authorities are examining radical proposals to deal with train-wrecking hooligans, such as dumping them in the middle of nowhere in the event of trouble.

Every season rampaging fans cause about SFr3 million ($3.5 million) worth of damage to trains. The destruction caused after May’s Swiss Cup final alone went into five figures.

Looks like they are a problem not only in trains:

Re: Soccer hooligans may be dumped off the trains :)

I am sure no village in the country would welcome a train load of angry football fans! This plan has not been very well thought through!

I have seen special secure railway platforms 200 meters north of Ostermundigen, near Berne, which I had assumed were for capturing large numbers of people.

The football clubs should be made to pay for the control of their rioting fans. I imagine one policeman with a dog per railway carriage would entice them to behave correctly.

No mention of the train actually stopping anywhere..

But seriously, when a couple of ticket controllers are faced with a train load of angry football fans who do you think will be disembarking the train..?

Re: Soccer hooligans may be dumped off the trains :)

I agree that this plan sounds seriously flawed. I can imagine that if they manage to get the hooligans off the train they are going to be upset and cause problems wherever they happen to be, and on their way home.

This will cause more upset around the country and add to the problems for local Police. At least on a train they can be kept in a controlled area.

The football clubs should be charged for all the costs incurred. This should encourage them to put more measures in place to control hooliganism. The general law-abiding travellers should not have to bear the costs.

Re: Soccer hooligans may be dumped off the trains :)

This suggestion would venture into very dodgy ground. How would the trouble causers be identified? High probability of innocent standers by being mistakenly thrown off the train with danger to their safety and health.

The guilty people need to be dealt with. CCTV in supporter designated carriages is one idea that clubs can contribute to. Also club trains where the same carriages are used for all travel may work. (i.e. these people may not be so ready to wreck something that is their "own"). It's a tricky one but frightening families and children is not big or clever and needs stopping.

CCTV is a good idea, whether as practical or as a deterrent.
I do notice that many have planned ahead and cover their faces with bandanas and the such. The VanCity rioters missed that memo, and there will be a few hundred arrests in the next while because of it.

Why don't they provide special trains with no seats? Let the buggers stand. I'm sure there are some older rolling stock that could be adapted appropriately

maybe they can put a sedative gas on the train and knock them out if they are too unruly and the put them on an island to battle each other. maybe i watched too much battle royale...

reading your post, This is what I had in mind:

I'm sorry people, but as I'm not really a soccer fan, I have to admit that the single greatest reason I don't like the game is because of the behaviour of such fans.

...... I mean (as a Rugby supporter), how can a bunch of people riot over a game where men with nice haircuts, dive like fairies, and wince at the slightest hint of pain insight such violence?

you wouldn't see that at the Ballet?

It's crazy

(to be fair - I know the game is great, and my appreciation of the game is growing -but it's difficult to ignore hooliganism and 'fairy' antics on the field.)

Can^t help thinking that will actually be beneficial to SBB when they next propose a fee hike affecting everyone and contributing to their coffers, retiring old rolling stock and funding newer ones.

Agreed. Many happy memories of mixed rugby terraces, singing and laughing and even exchanging a nip from a hip flask with fans of the opposing team during the Six Nations at the Millennium Stadium (neé Arms Park).

Whereas my regular Saturday afternoon journey back home after weeding my Nan's garden in South London was invariably terrifying if the Millwall fans got on. An old lady saw me shaking as these Neanderthals rampaged, spat, swore, pissed and pushed, trying to provoke some return aggression, and whispered, 'Just never look them in the eye'.

Yep, cattle trucks, that's the answer. With no windows.

I once read about a club in Germany that got one player to "sponsor" every carriage in the train. Displayed prominently in the carriage was the player's picture, autogram and maybe some other pictures commemorating highlights of the player's career. Of course the carriage didn't really belong to the player and the decorations had probably been put there minutes before the train was put into service, but the fact that fans thought they might be hurting their player or damaging his stuff caused them to be more responsible.

I don't think that would make much difference with the rent-a-hooligans. Not sure if their mutant breed have made it to Switzerland yet but in the UK there were bands of hooligans who weren't particularly bothered about football just getting stuck in to fans before and after games just to give them a kicking for the sheer hell of it.

Any appeal to their "footballing" hearts would fall on deaf ears, if this were the case.

Tear down the stadiums and put in some nice playing fields. You want to see a game of anything, you have to participate. Basically, say 'No' to professional sports. The athletes these days generally aren't much better than the fans, just paid better.
