One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

Hello!
I will be spending 11 months in Lausanne (with one wife and one child). Our dilemma: Should we buy a used car (and then sell it before returning to Canada)? I will be working in Lausanne. My apartment is a 5 minute walk from work. We will take several day trips, many weekend trips and a couple of week long trips during those 11 month. I hesitate between...
Plan A: We don't buy a car. We use public transportation for most of our trips. We occasionally rent a car for certain trips.
Plan B: We buy a car. That way we see more of the countryside (mostly France, Italy, Spain and Germany). But we have to deal with the buying and selling (which means we'll probably loose money because we will have to sell in a hurry), the registration issues, the insurance, the maintenance, the repairs, etc...
Any comments or suggestions?
Thanks
Claude

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

Don't buy a car.
Definitely too expensive!

Use pubic transportation + the local "car renting system".

It's red cars called "mobility"
http://www.mobility.ch/de/pub/standorte.cfm?staoid=-1

Think it that way:
No insurance (1500chf minimum)+ not spending 10 000CHF minimum on a second hand car + parking cost (250chf minimum)
compared to

renting a car when needed:
http://www.mobility.ch/en/pub/private/rates.htm

Definitely better!

EDIT:
Also think of the cost to go from Switzerland to Spain:
French motorways are paying!

I definitely recommend Plan A. Public transport and a hire car when the weather is good.

same than others....

and for visiting other countries (france, spain, germany, italy...) you've got the plane or the train and you rent a car up there.

Definitely, option A. Cheaper easier faster closer. Lausanne has a good transportation sistem, bycicles you can rent, Mobility is a great way to get a cheap car when you need it, and with the saved money you can rent yourself a car locally, after flying cheap.

+ another A. Parking is a nightmare- and expensive. Public transport is great- and just hire when needed (which is probably never).

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

we've been almost 2 years in lausanne without a car and i am happy as can be. so much easier for us than our car owner friends- they have to find and pay for parking, and it's expensive. you can join mobility (like zip car in ny, if you know it) and then rent a car for a few hours if you want. if we want to take a trip for a few days and get the 'on the road again' experience, we just rent a car from avis or something and go. it's much easier and liberating! and everything in lausanne is so accessible, there really isn't a need for one right here.

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

Also heads up for Public Transport, I lived in Lausanne before and now in Zurich, found no need for a car, only a Van when moving etc..

Got the GA (General Abandonment) last year, it's about 3200CHF~ a year and with a partner you save about 1000CHF~ + there is an option to bundle it with the Mobility CarShare system,

However once you get use to the transport system here you'll find it hard to change back

btw.. don't forget to convert your drivers license before 1 year is up, as you'll have to re-site some tests to get on the road here.

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

You can buy a car for fairly cheap - one that is 10 years old or has 150k km on the odometer. Public transport is excellent, of that there is no dispute, but if you want to get out and see the countryside at your own pace there's nothing like having your own car. If you have cash, I can recommend it as public transport is not that cheap, even with considering the usual expenses with a car. You might also look into mobility at http://www.mobility.ch/en/pub/index.cfm which might fit your needs.

I would defo not say that the mobility car rent is cheap...

Im thinking of buying a car 1.500 ch from a friend which still has a few months insurance on it...its a heap of junk, but hey! I have no family to look after! As long as it gets me down to Monaco...

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

I heard abou some kind of "pass" or "ticket" that you can buy; it is valid for a year and, with it, all public transportation within Switzerland is half-price. How much does such a pass cost (for myself, my wife and my 10 year old son)? How much do you have to travel for the pass to be a good investment?

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

Hello!

I think the annual GA card is only good value if you plan to do lots of weekend train travel to destinations all over Switzerland.

If you plan to hire the mobility cars for some weekends, spend time in Italy/France/Germany other weekends, and still do some train travel around Switzerland, then I think the Half Fare card for the year is a better option - costs CHF165 per year for adults, and less than CHF100 for kids.

As you are living in Lausanne, there is plenty to do without travelling far at all, so you may find you spend a lot of time at weekends in Lausanne itself.

Also, Lausanne has its own transport fare system - the Mobilis:

http://www.mobilis-vaud.ch/

You won't need it if you walk to work, but your wife can buy a monthly Mobilis Card for CHF 66 per month which will give her the freedom of trains/ buses/ the Metro all around Lausanne. The area covered is generous (zone 11 and 12), and if you need to extend the zone coverage, it is very reasonable. The website gives the break down of zones.

Your son may well prefer to get about with a scooter - very popular with adults and kids here!

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

One more vote for Plan A. We came from Canada 6 years ago and have never owned a car here. We mainly use bikes and public transport. We occasionally use Mobility cars and get a rental car maybe once a year for a long weekend or other special purpose.

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

I will just add me bit - food for thought only

We survived one year and a bit using Mobility - if you are going to be here less than a year, I would totally get a subsription.

However, we have now decided to but a car - however, I think we will be for a while here yet.....and to be honest, what annoyed me the most was inconsiderate people leaving the Mobility car in gear, hiding the parking permit and not leaving the handbrake on when parked - so start of July I will be cancelling.

However, back to the point - don't buy a car for the period of time that you will be here - it is expensive (am budgeting around CHF1200 per month!)

I hope that this helps

Re: One year in Lausanne. With or without a car?

In addition to Mobility there are a couple of other options for very inexpensive (CH standards) car rentals in Lausanne. All you need will be the car seat for Junior so you set for car use whenever you need one.
