So, what did you get for a total monthly figure in the end? I'll have to dig out my excel sheets to get mine. But it was 600 for the care payment alone.

I was typing through the tears as I thought of the costs, suffice to say it's double what it was to run the same car when we lived in France I pay the motoring bills, insurance etc as they come in, so the only fixed monthly cost would be garage space as I don't have a lease of finance payment. To save you grabbing a calculator though averaged out the CHF 9,000 would be CHF 750 pm, plus fuel which is about CHF 250 per month, so a nice round CHF 1,000 with no finance.... and excluding contribution to the local constabulary | | | | | Oooooohhh! Based on your figures I work it out as follows:
Regular costs:
Comp Insurance: CHF1600.- p/a
Garage Space: CHF2500.- p/a (above average i'd say)
Vignette and Tax: ~ CHF440.- p/a (assuming you pay 400 for the yearly tax)
Fuel: CHF200.- p/m(should do about 1000km per month)
Irregular costs + servicing: - Last service: CHF1500.- (is this per year or two years??)
- Service Before that: CHF2500.- (same question here)
Assuming the services happened over a 4 year period then (1.5k + 2.5k) / 48 gives you around CHF85.- p/m - Winter tyres should do at least 25,000km which means 4 years based on your monthly cost of fuel so the CHF800 / 48 =~ CHF17
Average cost per Month: CHF680.- so you owe me CHF300.- p/m | The following 2 users would like to thank The_Love_Doctor for this useful post:

Sorry to disappoint LD,but I do 30,000 kms a year so that's 2 services, and either a set of summer or winter tyres a year and this time round a set of each. I fill up 2 or 3 times a month so CHF 250 is an ave fuel bill. So on balance you owe me some swissies, and I'm good to collect any time

Sorry slightly off topic but I've never come across this one Is this really true, I always wash my own car at home, so far without any issues | Quote:
Car wash -> Normally, it is not legal to do this at home, unless you direct the dirty water to the appropriate drain. So, maybe once per month at self-wash? 5-10, or around 20 per month.

I budget 1000CHF per month for everything (500ish is the loan repayment). Including all the things like winter tyres and denting other people's car in the car park and having my car driven into etc.
I got a brand new golf with unnecessary extras about 14 months ago and have done 30000km in that time.
I have had no issues paying all the bills, and as far as I can tell I am on the lowest normal salary that people get.
In London I used to cry when taking a 10 year old car to the garage and getting absolutely random charges and shit work done.
Here I ring up the guy in the garage who knows who I am and just say 'I need to service me car'. He says 'bring it on thrusday'. I do and I give the key to a guy that doesn't look like he's going to rob me a says 'it will be done in 4 hours'.
No regrets.

No regrets. | | | | | A refreshing sentiment, and seemingly rare here. The usual advice is to go to Germany where everything is half the cost... I also go to a local guy. He's the type that will stop in the middle of his detailed explanation of what he fixed to walk over and polish some unseen spot on the car with a soft cloth. I get a change to polish my dialect and keep money in my local economy.

For running costs it's absolutely fine to afford everything in Switzerland if you have a salary. In London for example I found that maybe you can get a job that will pay rent but then what about everything else like food!?
For buying individual items I think it is true that a lot of the time buying in Germany is easier. For example I got tyres online because I could pick the ones I wanted. I asked my local garage and they quoted higher and did not give me a choice. I also have to source specialist music gear that often you can't even find in Switzerland. There is a big online shop in Germany that has excellent stock and service and ships for free.
Maybe if I check the invoice for my service I could have found a cheaper pollen filter elsewhere or something and overall maybe saved 100chf. But if I'm asking someone else to do work for me then I trust them and don't care if the parts are more than they need to be. I still have mates in the uk who are shy about going to the pub and paying for drinks FFS. Overall it's a win really.

It's only the bitching you hear on this forum. People don't usually come over to say "hey, everything went well today".
