How much will it cost me to own a car here?

I would like to drive a 4x4 (ideally 7 seater, but not a must) I am ok with manual and diesel. I would be driving to work each day and it's about 13 km each way. Parking is free both ends.
When setting up a budget what should I estimate for Teilkasko insurance and petrol?

Thanks!

Re: How much will it cost me to own a car here?

Diesel costs approx CHF1.90 a Litre.

You can find your dream car here
http://www.autoscout24.ch

Once you found the car go here
http://en.comparis.ch/

for your online quote.
You can find the mpg for the car online as well, and probably factor it will use 30% more fuel than the figures.

Re: How much will it cost me to own a car here?

In addition to all the normal running costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance) you should also remember that you'll need to pay vehicle tax (depends on the vehicle and canton, but for a big 4x4 I'd bet on somewhere between CHF700-1'000) per year and a vignette (CHF40-). You'll also need to buy number plates for the car (about CHF120-, if I remember correctly).

Maintenance in Switzerland is more costly than elsewhere. If you're used to UK costs, take that budget and double it to get an idea of Swiss costs.

Most people also keep 2 sets of tyres / wheels (summer & winter) so budget accordingly if your vehicle doesn't come with a second set.

If you live near the French border, it's much cheaper to cross the border and fill up with diesel there. It's currently about CHF0.40- per litre cheaper to buy diesel on the French side than on the Swiss side, a real bonus for those of us who live near the border.

17clarence has already giveny you the link to Comparis, where you can get an insurance quote.

If you have an older car, be prepared to spend some money to get it through its MFK. The inspection is much stricter than a UK MOT, and your vehicle will need to be in good nick to pass.

If you're bringing the car in with you, don't forget to budget for import taxes if you haven't owned the car for more than 6 months.

Hope that helps!

Re: How much will it cost me to own a car here?

If you can handle German, you can find test reports for many cars at www.tcs.ch. These include a fairly accurate, but somewhat pessimistic, estimate of the running costs for each. Typically, a Golf-sized car is estimated to cost you about 0.70 CHF / km, assuming 15'000 km per year. This is realistic, if you really include all the costs (parking, insurance, depreciation etc.). A big 4x4 (Touareg, Cherokee etc) is more like 1.25 / km.

Including the parking space (1200 per year), our diesel Focus has cost us about 9'000 CHF per year, driven 20'000km per year, over 8 years. The costs are nearly perfectly linear over time*. I would wager that new vs. old doesn't make too much difference, as we're finding that the lower depreciation costs towards the end of the car's life are being offset by higher repair bills. I would imagine a big 4x4 is going to be in the 1'000 per month range, at least. Depending on where you work and park, it may be a hindrance to use such a bulky vehicle for commuting...

* I freely admit I'm a nerd. Engineers can't help but collect and analyze data. It's genetically pre-programmed.

Are these price differences available generally in all french gas stations, or only specific, back-country ones outside main roads, deeper in france? I am in Lausanne, and would like to limit my diesel expenses here. Is it worth going somewhere towards Vallorbe, or montreaux & evian direciton?
Thanx

In my experience, the gas stations right along the border charge a premium over the ones that are further into France, and as everywhere, fuel in small villages is more expensive than in big cities. The 'surcharge' on the petrol stations located on the autoroutes negates any savings from crossing the border.

Having said that, with the exception of the autoroutes, you should still end up saving 30 rappen/centimes per litre even at the more expensive filling stations.

servicing+insurance+fuel+taxes+parking -> would definitely approach 1000 CHF per month.

Hi,

They claim it costs a minimium of 500 a month to run a car, my second car a Porsche 911 from 1983 costs way less than that a month to run!

Re: How much will it cost me to own a car here?

I guess I was being a bit pessimistic...

Insurance with casco -> about 2000-2500 CHF per year (comparis.ch to get best quote, as suggested above)

Tax -> around 400 CHF per year.

Fuel -> about 600km per month for work commute. if you average 8 l/100km -> about 90-100 CHF per month. (But I am guessing there will be more driving for shopping, etc. )

Parking -> Work/House garage free, so, that is good. unless you park and shop in bahnhofstrasse, i guess monthly parking costs can be negligible. 10-20 CHF per month if you are medium careful about parking fees.

Highway vignette -> 40 CHF per year.
Well, if you drive into France/Italy/Austria, you might have to pay a lot of road tolls.

Car wash -> Normally, it is not legal to do this at home, unless you direct the dirty water to the appropriate drain. So, maybe once per month at self-wash? 5-10, or around 20 per month.

Servicing -> Well, this is usually every 20K kms (1-2 years?), and if done in a dealer garage, can be around 500-1000 CHF per service. Hopefully, you don't get other breakdowns in-between services. Extra timing belt changes can cost you around 1000 CHF for every 80K kms depending on the model. Also, brake pad/disc replacements might be required, depending on usage.

MFK -> Normally, you buy a car with the road-worthiness passed. And you need to do it about 5 years after first registration for a new car, and then every two years. So, depending on the situation of the car, it can cost about 100-500 for every MFK (dealer garages might screw you for nothing)

Tyre change -> If you do it twice, about 100x2 = 200 CHF per year. Of course, you might need to replace tyres every 2-4 years, about 300-500 CHF per set.

That looks like most of the stuff to cost you, I guess. Am I missing other important stuff? So, it is possible that it might cost you less than 500 per month. but it is also possible to cost you more

Yes, but you're cheating because Carrera 3.2s are now on the upswing of their price curve.

Yes, I think mine costs about 120/month to not use it. The motorcycles, on the other hand, require two garages, tires every 4k km, etc. Don't want to even THINK about that!

On top of that you will have the depreciation. This is generally cost driver number one.

It's a 911 Sc Targa paid 24K chf (£10,000) in 1996 with 29,000km. Had a dealer service @ 40K in DE, then just changed the oil, brake pads, plugs, air filters & tires. 3rd Party insurance, never garaged & no rust. Probably the cheapest motoring I have ever had. If I sold it today I could all of my repair costs of my petrol money back! The Swiss guyis I was working with thought I was mad at the time, if the car had Air Con I would use it more.

Costs of service

I have UK VW that needs servicing and I went to the local VW garage....
ch. 600-700 for a basic service! I couldn't beleive it. Basic Service in the UK ch. 170 ....
However shopping around in the local neighbourhood and I found the same service for half the cost! Ch 300. It pays to shop around!

That's my two penneth.

I'm presuming that's monthly, but even so it's cheap I reackon.... depending on what you drive of course

I drive a Laguna 2 Kombi 1.9 diesel, and my comp' insurance is CHF 1,600 pa, my last service was CHF 1,500 and the one before that was a main with timing belt and disc and pad change was CHF2,500 (Porsche Cayenne is cheaper), good winter tyres are CHF 800 for 4 (after a hefty company discount), and my garage space is nearly CHF 2,100 pa. So I'm the thick end of 9k without road tax and vignette and I don't have a lease payment.... I kept my speeding tickets out of it though!

9000k per month for a car??? That doesn't seem right.
