Other than speed, you also have to watch out for traffic lights. My husband received a 250CHF fine for passing the traffic light 0.01s after it turned red.
Been there done that.

Light in question doesn't stay green or amber for more than 5 to 8 seconds.

Do they ticket you in Switzerland for going too slow as well? *shifty eyes*

That would involve the cops pulling you over and getting out of their cars. I'm pretty sure I've never seen that except for when they are looking for autostrada stamps.

I have never seen that.

I have heard of people failing the driving practical for driving too slow and don't mean 40 or 50 in an 80 zone stuff, rather 10 kph under.

Of course, this could be an urban legend.

This has to be a record. I've been driving in Switzerland for a month, and I just got my first speeding ticket in the mail today.

57 in a 50, reduced to 52. The bloody ticket is for 2km/h over the speed limit!!! Shoot me now. Just friggin' shoot me. At least the cost is low... 40CHF.
man up, mate!

first day driving in CH cost me chf700.

Re: My First Speeding Ticket

Hello,

today I've received my first speed ticket.
It doesn't say the amount... only to provide the detail of who was driving.

I was going 47km/h in zone 30 (17km more than the limit).
Does anyone know / can help me to understand the consequences of that?

Thanks,
M.

It's a 30 zone, so the penalty is relatively higher.
You're looking a few hundred CHF.
IIRC, I was 35-37 in a 30 going downhill and got a 120 CHF fine.

1st of all, you were lucky: 8 km/h more and you would have lost your license on the spot.

As this is your fist traffic violation, you'll probably get away with a massive fine (several 100 Fr.). However, apparently they don't know who drove the car. My advice: if you have legal insurance, call their hotline and ask what to do. I faintly remember that there's a way to avoid fines if they don't know who drove - if you and your family members make use of your right to remain silent (yes, we have that here, too), they don't know who to fine and will drop the charges. But make sure this still works / won't get you into further trouble.

Peter

The police do not take your license on the spot, the matter is handled by a judge. The dates of your license suspension are negociable as is any short prison sentance that can be taken at weekends or during holidays.

This is correct if you're caught by an automatic camera. However if the police stop you on the spot, they're are allowed to confiscate your licence rightaway if you're going more than 25 over the limit in town, 30 out of town and 35 on the freeway!
