| | Change of canton- Car registration
I have moved cantons late last year but have not yet changed the registration of the vehcile to the new canton. I have procastinated on this task...
Is there a deadline for this change to be made?
I plan to go to the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle and explain to them in my broken Deutsch the situation...basically be honest about the situation..
Looking for some guidance on how best this can be handled?
Cheers,
MM

Well, when I changed cantons they wouldn't LET me change registration until I had a permit for the new canton (I had an open B, and was married to a Swiss, so it was just a question of when), which took 6 months or so.
I have friends and neighbors with plates from other cantons for years and years.

Thanks Tom. And would it be fair to assume that your neighbours and freinds did not have problems when selling their vehicles?

MM | | | | | Selling would never be a problem, you just cancel the registration.
I would have thought just turning up and changing the plated would work,

I bought a bike from a co-worker, came with a BE plate, no problem.

It says you should have registered the car directly after you registered with the commune, altough they don't mention a deadline or fine.
They need the car document (Fahrzeugausweis) and proof of insurance. You can send these per mail.
I guess the best thing to do would be to call them and ask them about the delay ...
Hope this helps, Tom
BTW, the Swiss have this thing about low license plate numbers. The lower the numbers, the more prestigious. I don't know if that is the same in outher countries. Ask them for the lowest plates available ...

That IMHO would be a huge error of judgement, why not just go straight th the Police & report yourself for braking the law?

I'm afraid they're always checking that.

Thank folks, I think selling is the best way without having to go through the hassle of doing the changes. Will give my best shot.
