We plan a weekend trip for Montreux - heard its a spectacular spot. We travel four of these including one 10month baby. I was wondering what advice you can give me on how to get there, is it better to go by train or would you recommend to take car (my preferred option...). I just wonder how the parking situation over there is and if its safe to park somewhere out in the streets.

Does anyone have experience with Montreux and how best to get there?

Oh yes, and by the way, do you happen to know a good family not to expensive hotel (don't need to be fancy but clean and comfi).

Head towards Bern then the E25 to montruex. Sat nav will save you, it's an easy trip.

Look at the Hotel Splendid, it's the cheapest one there, has two underground car parks within walking distance, centrally located on the main strip and overlooks the Lake.

Rooms are nice and clean, friendly staff. I've been there twice.

Time wise, there would not be much difference between the train or driving. It depends how the little one travels and what you plan to do once you arrive.

Another good basic hotel is the Hotel Elite, it is very central.

We visit for the Christmas market nearly every year. Otherwise I'm not sure there's anything really special there (may be wrong??), other than Chateau de Chillon (they have guided tours in different languages at different times so check before you go). If it's a nice day a boat-trip from Montreux to Vevey is nice. The train station is central. Parking in town is probably tricky but hopefully the hotel you choose will have a garage. If you approach Montreux from the autoroute coming from Lausanne, the views onto the lake are really spectacular. You will also pass through the Lavaux vineyards which are gorgeous as well.

I love to drive but that is one trip I always do by train, really easy on the IC / ICN from HB and when you're there most hotels will give you a riviera pass card so easy to use all the busses Great place..
