Problems getting an insurance on temp plates....

I imported a car from Germany and I was given a temporary plate from Germany, paid the customs in Switzerland and went to register the car to get Swiss plates.

I was told I need to do an inspection before I can get the plates. The earliest inspection date is mid August. My temporary german plates expires in one week.

I asked for temporary swiss plates but they dont give it to imported cars - only "Swiss" cars. I called the insurance and they are willing to insure if i have a temporary swiss plate but not a german one.

I told the registration car - if I cant get a temporary plate then I cant insure it. How do they expect me to drive to the inspection date in mid August? They just said "Don't know".

Is there any way of getting the car temp insured till I get plates? any ideas?

For the inspection, find a friendly garage who is willing to lend you one of their garage plates (or have them bring it for you).

They don't expect you anything. They have a process (stupid one ) and they are following it.

1) You can't get insure, you can't drive. Do it at your own risks.

2) You buy "red plates" for export from Germany, approx 270 euros for 1 months.

3)You politely contact the "service of automobiles" and kindly ask to be put on the waiting list of any cancelled appointments.
In the canton I am in, they publish a pdf with a list of "appointments cancelled". Of course that document is not updated and you can only know the appointment if you've been nice and polite to them .

I "skipped" (or lost less waiting days) 12 days like that. Possibly 19 days but I was not available.

You can't buy them, unless you are a garage owner.

I've borrowed them in the past from a friendly bike shop when I was in the middle of getting a bike I had bought in Italy registered here (it took nearly a year!), in fact I put 6k km on the bike using garage plates by the time I got it registered (as new!)

No, but good luck finding

here's to show you it's not really a link located in a logical place:

http://www.vd.ch/fr/themes/mobilite/automobile/
Down it says:
"Prochains rendez-vous disponibles" (Next available appoitments):
Look for "Expertises":
http://www.vd.ch/fileadmin/user_uplo...expertises.pdf
You will see 1 appointment in that PDF. I'm sure there's more.

Anyway you don't need a link.
Call them, ask to contact the "service of expertise" or whatever and politely explain you can't wait for X or Y reasons and that you will greatly appreciate if they would offer you any cancelled appointment... Actually you don't even need to justify why.

Re: Problems getting an insurance on temp plates....

In Berne the Strassenvekerhsamt supply special permission and temporary number plates (Tagesausweis) to bring the car to the inspection,
it costs about Fr30 plus Fr 12 per day for the government 3rd party insurance, you will need to ask at your own cantonal SVA

http://www.pom.be.ch/pom/de/index/di...=&id=4e25e611f

or you can use a xxyy-U numberplate from a garage,

Thanks thou!

Even if the car is imported? Wish I lived in Bern if that was the case (at least for one week )

In Vaud the temporary plates from Switzerland are only delivered for " imported new vehicles". That's what said the minion on the phone, but they said quite a few craps, so I will never know.

Otherwise what about your german plates for export? what color are they?
Thanks

Just go to your local office and ask for the temporary plates. It covers all situations.

I wish that was the case - they only give temporary plates for "Swiss" cars. I bought the car in Germany and even if I already paid the customs my car is not seen as "Swiss".

Re: Problems getting an insurance on temp plates....

Have I got to come over there and do it for you?

First paragraph reads:
"Verwendung
Tagesausweise dienen der kurzzeitigen Inverkehrsetzung nicht
immatrikulierter Fahrzeuge. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei neben
Überführungsfahrten insbesondere Fahrten zur amtlichen Prüfung
vor der Immatrikulation."

Translation
"Use
Day tickets are for the brief registration for non matriculated vehicles. The guidelines focus on next transfer trips tours especially for the official exam before enrollment.

It even looks as though you can get the plates in Bern and drive to the test in Luzern!
Go and ask them in Luzern, print out the page I gave you from the Bern office. You were probably given the wrong information.

Here is the form to take to the Luzern office in
Arsenalstrasse 45, 6010 Kriens,

http://www.strassenverkehrsamt.lu.ch/pdf_d-012.pdf

this is the office where you go,

Zuständigkeit
a) Büro Sonderbewilligungen: Arbeitsmaschinen, Ausnahmefahrzeuge
b) Kassaschalter: übrige Fahrzeug

Take all the car papers, plus your passport, plus your canton Luzern Ausweis.

Re: Problems getting an insurance on temp plates....

I would find a friendly garagist to handle everything.

My local guy speaks German and Italian, and he's cool to deal with.

I can give you the phone number if you want.

That would be perfect!

Also, where about is the garage based?
