can i buy a GA if my L permit expires before the full year?

my fiance just took a job in Nyon and we have decided to live halfway between Nyon and Zurich and both do the commute via trains. However, i am only working on an L permit that expires when my work contract does (in February 2012) but with a very good possibility to get another contract afterwards.
my question is...am i allowed to buy the year GA if my permit expires before the year?

please help!

hi there,

At SBB they also have a monthly GA, which i had for a while myself, as i remember the cost is about 240.- a month, it goes for a year and get renewed again, but u can always cancel as i remember, i had it for a little over a year, check the contract, of what you can do.

regards

monthly GA
It's four months minimum according to http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and...scription.html. But once you get past the first four months then you can cancel it at any time.

305 CHF per month after the latest price rises, so if you keep it for a full year you end up paying about 300 CHF more than if you had bought the standard annual GA.

Is there actually anything in the T&Cs that makes it mandatory to be resident in Switzerland at all to buy a GA, provided that you pay upfront (i.e. by credit card)? All I could find were rules relating to buying a GA "im Abo" or "auf Jahresrechnung" - which makes sense if SBB ever want to see the money they're due. But if you just buy w/o the "Abo" and pay upfront?

Re: can i buy a GA if my L permit expires before the full year?

I've faced the issue just recently, as my permit was set to expire next week (American, yearly permit, blah blah). SBB told me I could have a yearly GA, which requires upfront payment, or take the monthly GA - but only if my permit was valid for at least 4 months from the date of purchase.

The takeaway is that you don't need to have residence to keep your GA, though for getting it, I can't be 100% certain.

That's what i was wondering too My wife comes here in blocks of 3 months on tourist visa and never had a problem buying half fare cards, so can't see why there should be a problem for GA.

We used to buy one month GA (as an add-on to half fare card) as and when required, again quite hassle-free, there is no obligation to continue beyond the first month. Might make sense if you are not staying for over 11 months in a year.

hi all,

one more thing to all these yearly tickets. you can give your ticket to SBB for one month a year, for example you leave the country for 1 month. when you get it back they will imburse you for that month with some coupon.

Can you still do that though? About this time last year, I had to commute to Bern every day for six weeks for German lessons, and asked at the station about upgrading my half fare card to a GA. They said that it wasn't possible for less than 3 months (which is different again from what the link I posted earlier says). I ended up having to buy a Streckenabonnement/abo de parcours for the first month, then cartes multicourses/Mehrfahrtenkarte for the remaining 2 weeks.

The most recent one was from 10 June 2011 to 9 July 2011.

as of 4 days ago, yes, you can buy a one month, standalone GA if you have a halbtax card. It's a lot more than a GA paid monthly, I know a first class is 580 chf
