Segway: Importing or buying local

Hi guys,

I'm comtemplating getting a new Segway and would be interested to know if anyone has any advice about my options. A brand new Segway goes for CHF10,000 here in Switzerland and $7,000 - approx. CHF6,000 including shipping costs. Does any one know how much import tax will be levied if I opt to import it from the US?

Thanks for any cues...

you can give me the money and I'll port you around.

But if you're seriously considering the import, give these people a call or email:

Swiss Federal Customs Administration

I doubt it

I'd give these people a call first about the "Low Down" to see what is and isn't legal..... as a business, they should know.
Although, as is typical with this country, I assume each Kanton has it's own rules.

Ask if business is doing poorly?
....... They may want to sell you one of theirs.

Re: Segway: Importing or buying local

They probably ARE legal, as I have seen them used in Zürich. Perhaps they can only be used on the sidewalk and not on the street ?

Re: Segway: Importing or buying local

Here is a link (German) to changes in the law effective 1st July 2011. Segways are considered small motorcycles.

http://www.segway.ch/cgi-bin/files/2...8d2ce9dfea3b9f

The long and the short. Effective July 1:
  • Segways can also use cycle tracks and cycle lanes.
  • The speed limit on these small bikes has been increased to 20km/h from 15, so the Segway no longer requires a speed delimiter. However they still require a light with its own power source. (This can be achieved with the Swiss Road Kit).
  • Young people from 16 onwards need a test to drive a Segway (Moped category). People with B driving licenses automatically qualify.

Thanks for the link. I called the office but they referred me to the postal office as the package will be shipped with Fedex and not the conventional borderly transactions they handle.

They are legal here and I used one before that had a "yellow" licence plate - the type you get for the very light motorbikes. I believe it had to get it's speed limited to some weird number (23kmh?) and some extra road safety stuff in order to meet the Swiss traffic code. I guess that's the loophole through which the "Swiss version" can ask for a higher price - you won't easily get your US one street legal here...
