Registration with insurance starting in the future

Alright, this might be a new one: when I go the the STVA to get the fahrzeugsausweis and plates, does the insurance for the car need to start on the same date? Or can it be also in the future?

Case in point: paid an advance for the car, seller told me he will go to STVA on Friday to get the stamp in the fahrzeugsausweis, after which I will pay the rest and go to the STVA for the new paper and plates. So in the meantime I've been busy getting insurance for the car, which I did, but set the start date to Friday.

The seller called me today and told me he went to the STVA already and we can meet for the exchange: money vs the stamped ausweis . So naturally I would like to go to the STVA tomorrow morning, 'cause then I could probably call a garage and get slotted in on Saturday for some work on the car. If I only go on Friday and get the plates, I doubt the garage will have free slots.

Of course, the only problem is me showing up at the STVA tomorrow morning with an insurance that starts the day after tomorrow. So...is this really a problem or they will give me the papers & plates anyway?

Thanks!

note: insurance company already sent the data to the STVA

It's a problem, no insurance no plates, every car in CH with plates is insured even if the premium has not been paid.

You should have started the insurance immediately, as it only becomes active (and you start paying) AFTER you have the plates!

Ring the insurance company and change the start date, easy.

Re: Registration with insurance starting in the future

Thanks for the answers, I guess I'll just go a day late and leave the garage stuff for the next weekend. It seems easier than changing the start date, then they have to send it to STVA, maybe something goes wrong...I know I worry too much (also about insane people)

They send it online, so it's done in seconds.

Re: Registration with insurance starting in the future

I see...however I guess it's too late to have it changed at this hour. And I planned to be at the STVA at 7:30 when they open...but the insurance company doesn't open until later.

But good to know for the future.

7:30?

Here, it's 8:30!

(gives me more time to sleep)

Oh, and you don't need to do it yourself, a friend could also do it (my girlfriend is more than happy to deposit/pick up plates, etc.)

Re: Registration with insurance starting in the future

Yea, they are open from 7:30 to 16:something as far as I remember. Gotta say it's pretty convenient if you need to quickly go by before work. Unfortunately I don't have any friends who don't work during the day, so there's no one to ask. But again, good tip for others
