I quote from personal experience but if someone has a mechanic they know who can do this for cheaper I'm all ears.
I can recommend this garage in Weil am Rhein, great prices, no hassle VAT refund and the proprietor is actually a Swissie

But are you saying this garage does it for lesser than 29 Euros(ATU)?

I second that. Just had some repairs done with him, he's pretty cheap and does a good job. He speaks English too.

Ok here is the reality - no ones doing it for less than 40 Euros . Atu Quotes for 49 CHF & Stop + Go for 40 Euros . So all are the same

That is @ ATU.de - but no use - its not 29 euro as shown in their website - it is 49 CHF!

That would be because the CHF price is for ATU outlets in Switzerland and the EUR price is for ATU in Germany

Do these guys do all sorts of work, or only the routine maintenance type stuff? Their website looks like they do most of the 'quickie' stuff like batteries, tyres, fluid changes, etc but I'm wondering if they could handle a straight-forward repair like replacing brake pads and discs?

I need new front pads and discs for my car, and I'm guessing that the Swiss price for this will be into four figures... Whereas I can source OE pads & discs for around EUR120-.

Will they generally fit customer-supplied parts?

yes no problem, they do all the normal things.

5 mins away is a DIY garage also if you are handy with a spanner - €12 per hour for the lift.

I generally get pads & discs from www.eurocarparts.com in the UK, all in stock & open on a Sunday, they will also ship.

That's exactly where I got the price quote. Now I need to find a garage that doesn't mind working with customer-supplied parts.

DIY.... takes me about 30 mins to change the front discs and pads on my car and that includes wheels and jacking!

Yes, but I lack:

1) Tools
2) Know-how
3) Workspace

For what it would take me to arrange these three things, I'd rather just spend the money to pay a professional to do it for me. If it's genuinely 30 minutes work, the bill should be very small. My guess was more like 90 minutes labour, plus parts.

what it actually takes and what is charged are 2 very different things. On my car the dealer books 2 hours.

I have had more success in France, as your in Basel that's not an issue. With groups such as Fou Vert it's upto the person on the desk if they say yes. Going back to the same place 2 days running can give a different result. It's actually written there is 100% surcharge for customer supplied parts on their menu priceing, however I had afront wheel bearing done on a BMW for 49 Euro.

I find the first wheel takes 40 minutes & the other 3 take 45 minutes combined! I don't do it very often so I am a little slow, a trained 'oily reg' should be quicker!

Re: CAR Service near Basel - 35 Euros

Went by the ATU in Germany today: oil change with Castrol Magnatec 5w-40 C3 (5l) + oil filter + work = 80eur. There is indeed the campaign with the cheap change in effect, but using their oil (which the guy told me could be anything inside the box, from Motul to Castrol....whatever). Imho 80eur is a pretty good price, so I'll be going there soon

My car is currently in a VAG garage in Häusern, quoted 650e for:
- timing belt (kit + tensioner)
- water pump
- valve cover gasket
- some o-rings for some sensor
- thermostat
- coil packs (the cost for these is sponsored by VAG though)

They were very cool and friendly when I dropped off the car (boss welcoming everyone, shaking hands, smiles etc), I'll come back with impressions after work is done, but I have a pretty good feeling about them

I would like to know what ATU would have charged. FWIW MOTUL have some of the best racing oils in the world & rhey are relly expensive!

Re: CAR Service near Basel - 35 Euros

I can ask that next Saturday. Probably less than these guys, but for such "important" work as timing belt I am happy to pay a bit more at an official VAG garage, in case things go wrong later, as I feel safer they will pay up for (potentially very expensive) damages. Could be I'm paranoid, but I just feel it would be harder/take longer with ATU.

Reg. the ATU oil being actually Motul, tbh I think the guy was just talking out of his a$$
