In NE you can choose your number plate - provided it isn't already used of course. It costs about 40 CHF extra compared to just getting a random plate.
It was 100chf when I was down there recently for the 'fixed price' plares. The more 'interesting' numbers are put to auction. Don't see the point really. You can't really have anything very interesting using NE and a few numbers.

Actually, I'd assume to receive less hassle when crossing the Swiss border (on the way home from shopping in Germany ) with a low numbered license plate.
I've heard that theory many times. I've also crossed the border many times (living as I do 5 minutes from it), and to date have never been stopped, despite having a high, 6-digit number plate. It must be my sweet and innocent face.

My favourite vanity plate, by the way, was on a driving instructor's car: EARNER. Naturally, when he had a student in the car, he put the L-plates on the car -- in front of the number plate.

I believe low numbered BS plates are often taxis and public vehicles. Though we have BS69 parked outside quite often.

OK well. My plate is BS - 7XXXXX. And I was noticing a lot of foreigners with cars that began BS-7XXXXXX. So I thought it was a trend. Thanks everyone for disproving my hypotheses.

That's impossible. As Baselstadt doesn't have more than 195k people. Is yours a 5 or 6 digit number?

Ah well. I thought in my head that it was 6 digits but it's actually a 5 digit (good thing I took a picture of it with my iPhone!)

I painted a minus sign on my plate. The border guys salute me as I pass through.

Right, but it already costs 60 CHF even if you don't choose, so my 40 CHF extra is correct. Unless I have misunderstood and the 100 is in addition to the normal 60.

I think people do it for "lucky number" or sentimental reasons. A friend who bought my old car recently chose a particular number because it contained the same combination of figures as her previous car (registered outside of Switzerland), which she had had for many years.

From what I understood it was 100chf extra but I didn't pay that much attention as I wasn't really interested.

I was pretty happy to get rid of the old Belgian plates which we couldn't choose. (SEX 400 is a tad embarrassing) One of my neighbours got
FUC 999 though so I suppose it could have been worse.

Well, then there can't be more than 80k registered cars in Basel I'd assume.
