Import a Subaru Outback or Prius?

Hello Everyone!

My girlfriend and I are planning to move to the Geneva area in about 7 months from Los Angeles. We own a Jetta Sportwagen TDI and planning to buy another car that we can take with us when we move. The rationale is that car prices are so much more there than here and my company will pick up the moving cost. I realize we might have to spend some $ (hopefully not to much) to make the cars comply with local regulations.

I am currently considering two cars, the Subaru Outback and the Toyota Prius. They are totally different animals, but both have some very appealing qualities.
Subaru: 4X4, good driving dynamics, lots of cargo for ski and camping trips
Prius: excellent fuel economy and reliability, dull driving

What do you guys think, which would be the best for importing to CH?

This is my first post.

thanks!

Re: Import a Subaru Outback or Prius?

I don't have much advice as to which car to buy except to say that if you do a lot of ski trips, the Outback might be the better choice -- but you might want to do it sooner rather than later if you are going to bring it over. If you own the car for more than 6 months (I think) you don't have to pay import duty on it - otherwise you will have another fee to pay.

We brought over a VW Routan to Germany 2 years ago (we had just bought the car and then found out we were moving about 2 months later and couldn't get rid of it). It was a big hassle, but our company didn't help with that part. We ended up paying about €1600 to convert the car to German/EU standards, but usually it doesn't cost that much.

prius is unreliable, expensive to maintain, gets JUST a bit better mpg than a diesel jetta or the likes. are butt ugly and VERY bad for the environment....production and disposal is.

so the outback would be your best bet

Re: Import a Subaru Outback or Prius?

Forget both:

The Prius is nothing more than an expensive marketing ploy. The Outback is sheep in wolf's clothing.

Why not stick with what you know: a VW. The Jeta is an ugly beast, why not go with what it should be - a Golf??

Well, there are a lot of threads on importing cars that you
can read to become informed.

The inspection authorities here really respect the quality of German cars, but I would not import the car unless it is nearly new.

If you buy a car, I would go with the Subaru. It is best for the mountains and snow conditions.

Switzerland has the best public transport in the world perhaps. Do
you really need two cars? Parking spaces are probably 200CHF
per month in Geneva if not more. My wife and I share a car, and it
works out well.
