Night tram controllers - Basel

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me! I've just returned from a night out in Basel and took the number 6 tram from Barfusserplatz as it took me close to my home and this meant I didn't need to take a taxi. Controllers was on the tram and I thought this was fine as I had my GA card. That was true, as I have received a 75 CHF fine as I did not have a valid ticket for the tram.

I explained to the controller I didn't speak german and could he explain what was happening, which he did very well and also when I got off the tram I asked him to kindly show me how to get the relevant ticket from the machine as I had no idea! He also pointed out the boards showing the time on them also said you need something I explained I can not read German. Which he understood. He mentioned I could speak to customer services at Barfusserplatz! End of the day I was in the wrong (not to my knowledge to begin with) so i'm happy to pay the fine, i just I thought my GA card covered me for all travel in Switzerland!

If anyone has experienced the same I would like to hear from you as I am confused and unsure if I should speak to customer services or just pay it and be done with it!!!

Thank you in advanced

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

Sorry! I forgot to mention I did do a search for night trams, controllers, tram tickets but I could not find anything useful! If I am searching under the wrong name please let me know as I do not want someone to re write something which has already been done!!! Thank you

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

From what i read in the forums here and please correct me if im wrong, to travel with the night trams you need an extra ticket which is 5chfs i think and is not included in the GA.

This is not the case in Geneva. Im just remembering something i read in the EF some time ago

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

Unsure of trams, but in Zürich we have the Nachtzuschlag ( a charge for night services ). The requirement to purchase the Nachtzuschlag is not exempted for GA holders.

In Basel, these will be done away with from this December, according to:

http://www.20min.ch/news/basel/story/24164861 - German ( run it through Google Translate or Google Chrome browser ).

SBB page is here for you about the Nachtzuschlag and the GA:

If you are new to CH / Basel and have very little or no command of the local language, you might want to consider writing in to the TNW Basel ( as I once did with the Zürich equivalent ZVV ) to explain that you merely made a mistake and had no intent to be a fare dodger. You might get it reduced.

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

yes, you need the supplemental ticket. you can get this via sms by texting 'zvvnz' to 988 and you will get a ticket back. easier than getting from the machine.

Valid for ZVV trains, not in Basel TNW.

The ticket vending machines are complete functional in English, so I guess it'll be hard to use the excuse.

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

Just to confirm, in Basel (TNW) you must pay the night supplement.

However, according to the Basler Zeitung (in German) the supplement is to be dropped in December 2011.

The GA covers "many" forms of travel in Switzerland but not all.

See the following pdf file for a complete list of included or reduced fare travel covered by the GA.

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

I've lived in Basel for 1.5 years and knew about the "night ticket" but thought it was a Zurich thing. I've never bought one here. What times does it kick in? Our trams don't run throughout the night anyway.

But if I had a GA and thought it was valid for the trams, what would I be doing pressing the keys of a ticket machine?

If I understood the controller correctly it only applies to trams on a Friday and Saturday evening going into the following day between the hours of 1am and 5am (this could be 4:30). Hope this helps if anyone has more accurate information, please update this as I don't want anyone else getting caught out.

100% correct, I don't use the machines.

Thank you everyone for your responses, it has all been very helpful, I will speak to customer services at Barfusserplatz and see if this can be reduced as no knowledge of local language and first time and I had a ticket just not a night tram ticket, I will keep you posted of the outcome.

Thank you all

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

Quote:

In a nutshell: you need to buy a supplementary ticket when travelling on Friday night/Saturday morning or Saturday night/Sunday morning after 01:20. If you're only travelling within one zone, it costs 3 chf; travelling through two or more zones will cost you 5chf. The supplementary tickets are valid until 05:00, and can be purchased from the automatic ticket machines (if you know you're going to be out late, it might be worth picking one up on your way into town, so you don't have to queue up at two in the morning with a bunch of loud, happy people).

This will no longer apply after December 10th, as a previous poster said.

Information here and here.

Sorry to hear that you got caught out - it's easily done, as it's easy to forget (or not even realise!) that a GA doesn't cover everything. It's definitely worth contacting the travel company to explain your situation.

Good luck!

Re: Night tram controllers - Basel

You quote "after 1:20" but I don't think the trams run after 1:20am in Basel. Oh well, you live and learn.

And considering how expensive that would make a single trip (6 Fr) and the fact the tram no doubt runs every 30 minutes, I'll stick with walking/cycling.

Strangely I find the machines appear to lose a whole bunch of functionality between me getting the early evening train up to Zürich and when I come to buy the Nachzuschlag at 01.55 for the 02.00 train. I can't imagine why that might be...

Thanks, that number is now in my phone. Will probably come in handy in the future (on those occasions where the choice is between becoming a Schwartzfahrer or spending too long figuring out the ticket machine and missing the train, so having to wait a whole hour for the next one).

I'm going to ask the obvious question:

What is a GA? (besides an abbreviation for the State of Georgia?)
