From London to Geneva: rental van

Hi all,

I am currently living in London and planning to move to Geneva the first week of October. I am planning to rent a small van to take all my stuff there, but I have some doubts since I am finding some "little" issues.

-You need to drop off the van in the UK, so will need to drive the car back to the UK.
-Unlimited mileage only within Mainland UK
-Extra fees for the insurance

Anyone has similar experience driving with a rental car/van from the UK to Switzerland? Do you know any rental agency that allows you unlimited mileage?

Thank you for your help

Rent in Calais then drop the French side of Basel, it can be done with the big companies. It cost's a little more than standard but way less than the petrol & tolls to return. Driving abroad is common in European rental cars, usually standard.

Re: From London to Geneva: rental van

Thanks for your quick reply, but that will mean first getting to Calais to pick up the car, came to London to take all the stuff, and then cross the channel again and drive to Geneva.

I guess that this will mean less kilometres, but the hassle of crossing 3 times the channel

Thanks!

You cross 2 times with the van on a day return, sometimes cheaper than a single.

Actually, I am checking prices and it is not a bad idea. Will need to talk to the car agencies to figure out possible problems of taking the car to the UK (for some hours)
Thanks for your help.

I hired a van one way from London-Zurich with these people:
reception@oneway-vanhire.com

They were helpful and I had to pay for their driver to fly one way economy to Zurich to pick it up, but of course did not need to pay for fuel or ferry going back and saved time/stress of return trip (priceless!).

They are based in Spain I think and mainly deal with one ways between UK and Spain/France but when I emailed they were happy to arrange it to Zurich so they may also do Geneva. I had a good experience with them.

Re: From London to Geneva: rental van

I was looking into driving my stuff from Ramsgate to Zurich but in the end the costs, factoring in the time as well, didn't seem to make it worth it. I didn't know about the one-way option rachelw mentioned and that may have made a difference. But the quote I got was decent and I didn't have to drive or lift any heavy items. My stuff was picked up the night before I left and was in Zurich at about the time I arrived the next day, but they agreed to deliver the following day. That meant I also saved on an extra piece of baggage as I only need to carry anything important or needed the next day.

Re: From London to Geneva: rental van

Some of the international movers will give you a good deal too because they frequently have vans coming back to CH empty after their deliveries.
I'd recommend someone but mine was a move from Brussels some time ago.

Re: From London to Geneva: rental van

Hi,

I bring some updates:
Finally I decided to go with a moving company since my situation changed a bit and got a fair quote.

If somebody interested, I got information to rent a van in the UK:
-If you want this to be a one way rental, they will charge you ~500
Otherwise, you will need to drop off the van in the UK
-You will need the European Insurance. That was 50 for 1-2 days
-If travelling during the week, you can get good deals for the ferry (Dover-Dunkerque), for around 30-40.

Thank you all for your recommendations.

Regards,

Re: From London to Geneva: rental van

I can see the problems of renting a van in the UK. As soon as I say I need to take it out of the country you would have thought I had just said I was going to blow it up.

I am taking my Swiss car back to GB to use for a few months until I get another (a UK one) and when in the UK I am going to rent a van and come back here and get my things. Seems cheaper than a removal company at the moment. Just need to find a van now
