Price negotiation after signing contract but before payment is made

Hi all,

I've signed a contract to purchase a new car (Leasing) with a large downpayment beginning of June. Since then the Euro has dropped and dropped and dropped and now some car manufacturers start to give massive discounts (20%).

I am going to pick up the new car now on the weekend but I was wondering whether I should try to negotiate on the price? What tactic would you employ?

To avoid him laughing in your face, the only one that is likely to be successful is one that brings him and/or the leasing company, an increased profit. This could means leasing a more expensive car; increasing the amount you are borrowing or similar.

A signed contract is a legal document - end of story.

What I would look into as a negotiating tactic is a 'penalty' clause of some description.

If the amount you have to pay is minimal (for not honouring the contract) then threaten to purchase your new car from somewhere else, and pay the penalty.

They won't want to lose the business, and then re-negotiation can take place.

If you are bound, however..... I'm afraid that things could get messy, legal, and expensive and you will most likely still have to pay the signed and agreed price.

put it this way

if the CHF tanked and the dealer phoned you up and said, "sorry the price has gone up 20% now" what would you do?

thanks for your thoughts ... I was afraid that signed means signed and that's the end of the story...

I guess I just suck up to it and forget that I might be paying 20-30% more compared to buying now...and keep my dealer here as a friend rather than foe in case of any warranty issues or services..
