TV to England

hi,
I would like to send my TV back to my sister in England - just wondered if anyone knew the cheapest/easiest way of doing this?
I have had a look on the forum - but most people are coming this way i.e. to Switzerland!
Huge thanks

Re: TV to England

Before you send it, make sure that it can decode PAL I (Switzerland uses PAL B/G). If it isn't compatible then you might not get sound in UK.

(A lot of TVs these days are multi-standard (they ask you what country you are in when you go into setup), so it might not be a problem.)

(Actually, having said that, does anyone actually watch TV using the arial socket these days?)

Re: TV to England

The picture will work but the sound may not. As explained by Mirfield the sound here is different (The IF is at 6 MHz and not at 6.5 MHz)

If she is connecting the TV to a cable box or a satellite dish then she would be using the SCART cable and the sound would be OK.

TVs are so cheap these days that I really think you could buy her one online and get it delivered to her door.

So later on you say you brought the TV from England! Why didn't you say so?

Re: TV to England

Whereabouts in England?

There's a couple of EFers who occasionally nip over to UK in their vans. If the location's right then you might be able to do a deal with them.

Re: TV to England

The removals company I used when I moved here makes regular runs to Switzerland, and when they dropped off my stuff they were heading back empty. If she is in the London area, or anywhere in Kent between Dover and London, they might be able to give you a good price. The company is France Removals and they advertise on here in the upper right corner. I think they make the trip each week.

Just saw your reply about her being in Guildford. Their base is in NE London so if she can collect from there it would be cheaper than them making the extra trip to Guildford.

Great! I was really pleased with their service when I moved here and I'm glad to hear it seems to be their usual level of service.

Re: TV to England

Just belatedly pointing out that the difference between PAL B/G and PAL/I (in other words, 5.5MHz vs. 6MHz audio subcarrier offset) is now pretty much irrelevant as old school analogue TV has been completely turned off in Switzerland and is close to being turned off completely in the UK.

It'd only be a difference if you had, say, an old VCR that only connected to the TV via an RF modulator.

It's quite sad, really - I got to visit Swisscom Broadcast's Uetliberg transmitting station a while ago and the old UHF TV transmitter hall is so empty now the mighty high-power amplifiers necessary for reliable analogue signals have been removed (and replaced with a rack or two of solid-state digital kit) that they have room for a nice little exhibition of transmission-related bits and pieces.

Re: TV to England

no point in sending it as it would be less expensive to buy a new one in the UK
