2nd hand car lease - on an L permit

Hi all - so my permit came and it's an L. for the most part that doesn't seem to affect us, but seems like leasing a car is a bit of an option. Rang 2 places and both said the same. I've read all on the posts on here that I can find about this, and none fill me with hope.

Wondering - did anyone end up in a similar situation and manage to get a 2nd hand lease?

What we know
1) we definitely need a car - have kayaks etc that need transporting. We have train tickets and have used mobility etc, but definitely need one for weekends / exploring
2) we can buy one, but are worried about being stuck with it when we leave. Have heard some horror stories about trying to sell of 2nd hand cars which are below a certain price and really struggling.

Any tips be great!

Re: 2nd hand car lease - on an L permit

but importing from home - do I not need to own it first for 6+months, otherwise I get hit with import of c. 17% or whatever?

I sold my car from home. Wondering what happens if I buy one and bring it over!

..... in which case you wouldn't be able to get out of the lease either .

yeah - understand. Sounds like we're either getting a 12 mnoth lease OR buying something cheap that we dont mind getting stuck with!

Re: 2nd hand car lease - on an L permit

Thanks for that! Am also wondering, how easy / hard it is to sell a car on afterwards at that sort of budget?

So we're probably going to be here for 18 months - wondering if we buy that say for 5k CHF. If we were willing to sell it on for 3k in 18 months, how easy / hard would it be to sell do you think?

Trying to get head around the swiss 2nd hand car market. We're worried less about loosing money on it, and more about being stuck with a car that we can't sell on!

Hi
I can give you my example. i bought a 1997 Renault Megane for 4000 CHF in Feb 2010 and sold it to a garage for 1300 CHF in MAY 2011 (with summer and winter tyres).
I hope you got an idea about the price depreciation here. You can always sell the car that not the problem it only depend on the money you get out from it.

your going to lose money on any car you buy, unless you happen to have a pre order on the Enzo replacement

if its cheap enough you'll sell it, MFK (like the uk MOT) is king here, if it has a new one then someone will buy it. I wouldn't bother trying to sell it on here though, better off using autoscout or ricardo (like ebay) or even ebay.

and therein lies the problem!! you tried to sell it on here for
"Asking price: 3500 CHF negotiable" no wonder you didn't sell it!!

If you had stuck it on for 1500 then someone would have bought it.

It is possible, but you need to push a bit. Similar thing happened to me when having L permit, I've found a car in a dealer and wanted to buy it, they asked for my papers and then 2-3 days later I was told that GE Money Bank is not accepting lease with L permit. So I wrote a letter to GE Money Bank, telling that they're a crap company and I'm going nowhere, I will tell all of this to my friends, I will do anything for GE money bank to lose money...etc..etc In 24 hours I was called by GE; and the guy on the phone was apoligising from me for like 10 times and he told me they would approve my request

Re: 2nd hand car lease - on an L permit

Hi all - thanks for the replies. OK, starting to understand now

1) a lease MAY be possible
2) If I buy something cheap enough (say 6-7k) and drive for 18 months, I'm prob looking at selling it for say 4k. That would be ok with me. Not ideal, but ok - means car has cost me c.150 a month in depreciation. I'd be fine with that, if I thought I'd sell it ok.

Thanks all, a thought starting to form

If you buy from a dealer you will NEVER recover 4K from a 6K car after 18 months, probably not even the following day.

You need to buy on Ebay or Ricardo paying 2-3k, then you will be able to sell for 1-2K after 18 months.

Re: 2nd hand car lease - on an L permit

OK - understand.

So if you imagine a 6k CHF car from a dealer, what would this cost to buy privately? Sorry if a stupid question, just in different countries this ratio can be miles out! Like is it 4k privately?

Cheers

The owner will ask 6K, it wont sell in the end a dealer will pay 2K.
2-3K will be the price on Ricardo, that's what it's worth to sell.

Re: 2nd hand car lease - on an L permit

Wow, ok didn't realise such a difference. So at home in Ireland for comparisons... card for 6k with dealer, would be prob 5k privately. MAYBE 4.5k at a push.

So choice here is - get from dealer and lower risk, or get privately and bank that "saving" icnase it needs repairs.

So - before we got a full once over from a mecahnic (company who do this) before we bough privately. Is there a service like this in Zurich? Like a mobile mechanic that will go and spend an hour diong a report on teh car?

Thanks
Graham

The guarantee on an older car in CH will expire before you start the engine, i.e without guarantee.

Try to buy a car with new MFK & main dealer servicing which is normal here. Even a 10 year old car should look like new. If it looks at all rough just run a mile.
