Question about Swiss half fare card

Hi,

I was living in Lausanne last year and I got a half fare card (it is not with a credit card just a normal half fare card) which is about to expire in Oct. 2011. Does this card renew automatically like the bahncard in Germany. Do I need to cancel it before it renews? I tried to find information online but couldnt. If yes can someone please tell me how I can cancel it?

Thanks.

Hi Mirza,

Don't worry, the card will run out - no automatic renewal. You don't have to do a thing in fact.

The staff is supposed to tell you explicitly about that when you order the card (we spent about 10 minutes being lectured that the renewal fee would be debited automatically, as most people in the past did not seem to be aware of that).

I cant remember if i was told that when i was ordering. Probably not as i was wondering if i needed to renew or not.

Anw in my case it was not important as the automatic renewal saved me having to do it myself. I agree with you it has to be made clear though

Re: Question about Swiss half fare card

Is that SBB Pre-paid credit card worth getting if you can't get a credit card from a bank?

Badly missing a debit card here. Don't understand why they don't have them, as the "bank cards" that you're given are largely useless for..anything.

No idea about the credit card as mine is a normal one and not a prepaid. Are you sure about the debit cards? I have one from UBS and its ok

Re: Question about Swiss half fare card

That's not a real debit card is it? Is it one of those "credit cards" that lets you build up a balance and forces you to pay it off at the end of the month?

From what I've seen on the forum, and from talking to the family in law over here, Switzerland doesn't have a card that you can use online/in shops that will take money from your account the same/next working day. I've never seen a bank offering visa debit either.

My father in law has a bunch of cards, one similar to a debit card but the number on it is useless for buying online.

Your bank doesn't have a Maestro debit card? I would have thought that was very unusual.

Maestro is direct debit - no building up a balance, no monthly bill.

Maestro is a debit standard, but Raiffheisen (spelling?) Don't do one that allows you to buy online - the number on the front doesn't work for online purchases. Neither does anyone else from what I've seen.

I've seen plenty of Maestro cards, but none that have a proper card number on the front.

I think you're right there... all the online purchase sites that I use only seem to accept Visa, Mastercard or Amex.

Re: Question about Swiss half fare card

Well if I'm buying from the UK I can use Maestro, so long as I have a correctly formatted number to submit. Again, I haven't seen one in Switzerland so far.

The other problem with that standard is that somehow, Swiss Maestro cards don't work in machines that say they accept Maestro. We encountered this when my gf was living in England. Her maestro card wouldn't work in any cash machine, mine worked in all of them. We took the card into the bank and the bank said that the number was in the wrong format, and she didn't understand why it has the Maestro symbol on the front.

Thats weird. I used my Swiss Maestro card in the UK, in Cyprus and in France with no problems. Both to pay in shops and in ATMs

I've seen some people comment that older Swiss Maestro cards are not "true" Maestro and only work in shops abroad.

I don't know how true that is or if things have changed, as it was a few years ago.

In my experience, Swiss Maestro cards work perfectly well in cashpoints at banks in the UK. They do NOT work in the free-standing ones that you see in motorway service stations and other petrol stations.

Re: Question about Swiss half fare card

Maestro cards in general are notorious for not working at random times outside their country of issue. IIRC, Maestro is basically still in some ways a branding exercise (individual country debit cards in several countries got rebranded as Maestro) rather than a guarantee of interoperability.

There's no genuinely pan-European debit card system, only credit cards (and if you have the temerity to want to, for instance, use a credit card in a Dutch railway ticket machine because you don't have a Dutch-issued debit card, you get charged extra).
