For me the equation is very simple:

Driving to the vet hospital: 30 minutes.
Public transport to the vet hospital: 2 hours, no transportation after midnight.

In an emergency 1.5 hours can be the difference between my mutt surviving and dying.

It doesn't matter how much cheaper public transportation might be; the cost of driving a car is worth every penny, if only for the once in a lifetime you need to make that run.

---

Car vs public transportation is about much more than cost. One can only decide what makes sense given one's individual needs. I just thank doG that here in Switzerland we have the choice of two good alternatives.
Well, my consideration of getting a car is exactly for this reason.
In my case, I have a family with a baby and the car will be used, aside from weekend traveling, in the case emergency.
I agree with Meloncollie that it is not just $$.

edit: I still go to work by bus.

Re: Car vs SBB: Where's the savings?

I guess now that I have read all the posts it simply comes down to time. I think I might even use the car if the train was free for my trip to work because I value time with my daughter at home reading and playing and I feel that I waste needless time using SBB. To each his own I guess.

Yes, it does depend entirely on where you live, not only your own personal preferences...although I suppose where you live is your own preference.

exactly, if you start with no car, you would be careful in picking where you live to make sure it has good connections.

Indeed. That's why I always keep a fast helicopter parked outside, that I can use to me get to my Learjet that's on permanent standby 24/7/366, coz I don't know when that once-in-a-lifetime event will happen, and I want to ready when it does.

We also keep our dive gear under the bed in case the tides unexpectedly rise by 50 metres overnight and catch us on the hop, (right beside the 50-calibre rifle, in case wolves ever return to Scotland)...

The way you write your posts (this one is a great example) is like peering in through your ears and watching your big brain wheels slowly turning

Thanks for a Monday morning smile
